During the 2019 SAFETY4SEA Cyprus Conference, Capt. VS Parani, HSSEQ Manager, Oceanic Marine Management Limited, discussed how heuristics can be used for better decisions onboard ships, stressing that seafarers make several high-stakes decisions every day- not all end well, given that there are on average 100 total ship losses and 1000 fatalities every year, mostly attributed to human error.

The Port of Dover has the resilience to cope with moderate disruption arising from Brexit and there is latent short sea capacity to absorb significant overflow at the port in the event of capacity constraints, according to an independent study by global shipping consultancy Drewry.

International maritime charity Sailors’ Society is calling on ship owners to embrace conflict resolution as a matter of urgency, following three knife attacks at sea. The charity supports that shipowners should avoid and prevent these incidents in the safety of seafarers.

SEA EUROPE stated that with 90% of international trade, 80% of the EU’s external trade and 40% of the EU’s internal trade carried by water, shipping is vital for trade. In the meantime, shipping accounts for the 3.1% of CO2 emissions. Should no actions to be taken, shipping emissions could exceed the 250% by 2050. 

Sailor's Society  alerts on seafarers' mental health, as a suicide incident image emerged. As Sandra Welch, deputy CEO of Sailors’ Society stated the image is a wake up call to the maritime industry. Thus, the incident is only one case, amongst the rest that go unreported every year.

Female seafarers marked themselves lower than the general average in the latest Seafarers Happiness Index while deck crew and officers tended to be happier than their engineering counterparts. How does the industry challenging injustice and valuing diversity though? Are any equal opportunities out there?

The Global maritime Forum published an article based on the team diversity in organizations and the importance of it. Increasing the diversity of your team and providing your employees with a feeling of belonging can give your organization a competitive advantage over firms which overlook these values. 

Lloyd's List reported that an internal document of Cargill, a grains and agricultural trader, 'the Inclusive and Diverse Speaker Guidelines' commits the US’ largest privately-owned company to assemble panels and speaker line-ups that are gender diverse.
