Microplastics in the ocean are harmful to marine life

Micro-plastics – tiny pieces of plastic or fibres which may act as a pathway for persistent, bio accumulating and toxic substances entering the food chain – are increasingly being found in the oceans and may prove to be as harmful to marine life as more obvious, larger debris, such as plastic bags, according to a new report. The report – Sources, fates and effects of microplastics in the marine environment - a global assessment – has been published by the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP), an advisory body that advises the United Nations (UN) system on the scientific aspects of marine environmental protection. “While there is a need for further assessment of the problem, the report is the first attempt, at a global scale, to identify the main sources, fate and effects of microplastics in the ocean and offers improved understanding of the scale of the problem. The assessment suggests that there needs to be a wider awareness of the potential harm that microplastics in the oceans could cause,” said Dr Stefan Micallef, Director Marine Environment Division, at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Administrative Secretary of GESAMP.   “Even tiny ...

Norden targets on fuel efficiency during 2015

Norden has issued a report of its annual general meeting by Chairman Mogens Hugo  highlighting that during this year, the company aims to improve fleet fuel efficiency by 3%. Chairman states that this year, Norden will continue to focus on on fuel efficiency. ‘’Our vessels must go further to the litre for the benefit of the environment and the bottom line, and here, we have also set a target for our saving. In 2015, we aim to improve the fuel efficiency of the core fleet by 3%. If we see the same activity as in 2014, this will equal a reduction of 17,000 tonnes of fuel – or, measured by the going rate for bunkers, USD 5.5 million’’ Also, the company entered this year the most distinguished list of companies monitoring and reporting on emissions from their operations: the Carbon Disclosure Project’s A-list – and focus on training all managers in anticorruption. The report provides an overview of Norden’s intiatives, key figures, ship values and operations . View more by clicking here. Ship ballast dumps around Australia increase risk of invasive species

A small team of math and biological researchers with the University of Adelaide, has found that the amount of ballast water being dumped into the waters around Australia more than doubled over a thirteen year study period increasing the possibly of invasive species introduction. In their paper published in Royal Society Open Science, the team describes how they studied historic ballast data to create a model of ballast dumping, and discovered that most of the increase can be attributed to mining operations. When big ships unload their cargo, they are left mostly empty, which creates a weight distribution problem—to fix that problem, giant pumps are used to fill ballast tanks with water from the sea in which they reside. Unfortunately, those pumps also suck up local organisms, which then live in the ballast tanks for some period of time as the ship travels to a place to pick up cargo. Upon arrival, the water in the ballast tanks is pumped back into the sea in anticipation of new added cargo. But, as scientists, environmentalists, sports enthusiasts and others have found, that ballast water may contain an organism that is able to take up residence (dubbed an invasive species) in ...

Lloyd’s Register issues emissions guidance

With key dates looming - 2016 NOx compliance and a 2018 review of fuel availability ahead of a global cap for SOx emissions, LR’s new guidelines and updated technical information supports operators’ investment decisions. This new guidance addresses operational and in-service considerations reflecting further accumulated experience from working closely with clients, industry groups and regulators. As well as a focus on exhaust gas treatment (scrubbers) the guidance also examines the wider scope of options for SOx/NOx compliance beyond exhaust gas treatment.  Since an earlier version of this report was issued in 2012, early adopters of the technology, mainly passenger ship and ferry operators,  have committed to fleet-wide scrubber implementation programmes. Early adopters gain valuable operational experience as well as a head start in both understanding the technology and realising any benefits. In the majority of the tanker, bulk carrier and container segments the uptake of scrubber technology remains slow. With shorter periods inside Emission Control Areas (ECAs), lower fuel consumption (especially due to slow steaming) and typically lower asset residual values, the business case for installing scrubber technology on deep sea tank, bulk or container ships is not, yet, either strong enough or urgent enough. The bunker price collapse during ...
