ILO issues Compendium of Maritime Labour Instruments

Feat. MLC, Seafarers ID Convention and the Fishing Convention ILO published Compendium of Maritime Labour Instruments' book containing its three landmark Conventions adopted for seafarers' better working and living conditions: the first is one of the International Labour Organization's most innovative and successful international labour Conventions, the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 and other related Conventions, the Seafarers' Identity Documents Convention, (Revised) 2003, and the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007.1) The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006), which entered into force on 20 August 2013 and at that date already applied to 30 Members with a total share of nearly 60 per cent of the world gross tonnage of ships, is often described as a charter for decent work or a "bill of rights" for the world's maritime workers and a framework for creating a level playing field for shipowners. BS MOU issues Annual Report for 2014

5,092 initial inspections conducted, 18350 deficiencies reported Black Sea MOU has issued its PSC Annual report for the period between 1st January and 31st December 2014.During this period: a total of 5,092 initial inspections, representing 0.24 per cent increase as compared with 5,080 initial inspections in 2013.The regional inspection rate is 69.41% which is 5.80% increase compared with 2013. Indian Ocean MoU issues Annual Report 2014

A total of 6059 inspections were carried out in 2014 The Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding (IOMOU) issued its Annual Report for the year 2014.The report summarizes the port State control (PSC) performed by the IOMOU member Authorities based on various ship types, flag States and Recognised Organizations. Apart from general information, this report provides the outcome of the results of PSC inspections undertaken by individual member Authority during the year 2014.In addition, this report also includes statistics and analysis on the results of inspections carried out by the member Authorities during the year 2014.Key PSC data A total of 6059 inspections were carried out in 2014. Out of these 6059 inspections, 3469 inspections had deficiencies and the total numbers of deficiencies were 16856.Serious deficiencies noted by PSCOs led to the detention of 379 ships. The detentions allow for the rectification of the serious deficiencies prior to the ships departure; the overall detention percentage for the year is 6.26%.There is increase in total number of inspections in 2014, compared with those in 2013; whereas, the detention percentage decreased from 7.07% recorded in 2013.The average number of deficiencies per inspection in 2014 (2.78) has slightly increased compared to the previous year ...

Report reveals cyber attacks in the maritime oil sector

The Phantom Menace report issued by Panda Security Panda Security has released Operation Oil Tanker: The Phantom Menace, a groundbreaking report that details a malicious and largely unknown targeted attack on oil tankers. The Economic Impact of Opening NSR

  A study issued by CPB outlines the effects of the economic shock associated with the opening of the Northern Sea Route  A consequence of melting Arctic ice caps is the commercial viability of the Northern Sea Route, connecting North-East Asia with North-Western Europe. This will represent a sizeable reduction in shipping distances and a decrease in the average transportation days by around one-third compared to the currently used Southern Sea Route. CPB study on the'' Melting Caps and the Economic Impact of Opening the Northern Sea Route'' examines the economic impact  in a multi-sector model with intermediate linkages. This includes a remarkable shift of bilateral trade flows between Asia and Europe, diversion of trade within Europe, heavy shipping traffic in the Arctic, and a substantial drop in traffic through Suez. These global trade changes are reflected in real income and welfare effects for the countries involved. The estimated redirection of trade has also major geopolitical implications: the reorganisation of global supply chains within Europe and between Europe and Asia, and the highlighted political interest and environmental pressure on the Arctic.
