Japan P&I Club released a report concerning ships and harbour accidents. It says that despite the fact that there were indications that such accidents are less, a recent slight increase made clear that more measures need to be taken. The report also says that the main cause in the majority of the accidents is the human element.

More than 25% of seafarers show signs of depression and many won’t ask for help, according to a study carried out by international maritime charity Sailors’ Society and Yale University. The results, including responses of more than 1,000 seafarers, were presented at Sailors’ Society’s Wellness at Sea conference on 16 March, in London.

ITF report outlines technological, operational and energy measures to achieve zero CO2 emissions through possible decarbonisation pathways. Carbon emissions from global shipping are expected to reach approximately 1,090 million tonnes by 2035; an 23% increase of emissions compared to 2015.

A new paper addresses the impact of periodic hull cleaning on oil tankers concluding that periodic hull cleaning leads to a significant reduction in the daily fuel consumption and hull cleaning energy efficiency effect is greater when the vessel is sailing laden rather than in the ballast condition.

Massachusetts could produce more energy from offshore wind than any other state in the US, according to a new report from the Environment Massachusetts Research & Policy Center. Namely, offshore energy can provide 19 times the state’s annual electricity consumption.

Human activity increases the amount of nitrogen that reaches the oceans by 50%, on top of natural processes, said a report by the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection, assessing the magnitude and impacts of anthropogenic atmospheric nitrogen inputs to the ocean. 

According to the report "Future of the sea", the shipping industry is a vital part of the UK economy, as 95% of imports and exports are carried by sea. The UK maritime sector is the largest in Europe, worth an estimated £14.5 billion. Growing population and development will increase the demand for the transport of goods and the drive to mitigate against climate change will put pressure on the shipping industry to lower CO2 emissions.

The report considers the climate risk of 53 of the Asia Pacific region’s largest ports and estimates costs for adaptation. Taking into consideration ports in Japan, China and Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, India, South Korea and Malaysia, the report concludes in a low case cost of around US$30.9 billion and a high case cost of around US$49.4 billion.

After renewable energy production experienced its uptake in 2016, 165 gigawatts of new capacity are now supplied from clean sources. In this new reality there are three countries which will responsible for two-thirds of global renewable energy expansion to 2022: China, USA, and India.

A digital twin is a ”digital presentation” of a vessel with associated processes and systems, based on continuous data collection.
