Finnish cargo handling company Cargotec has set sustainability targets for 2018, focusing on increasing safety awareness, setting a new sustainability standard for the supply chain, as well as increasing the usage of renewable electricity.

The US Energy Department has announced the award of up to $40 million, subject to appropriations, to design, permit, and construct an open-water, grid-connected national wave energy testing facility. The facility will be constructed in Newport, Oregon and will support innovations in wave energy technologies capable of harnessing the significant wave energy resources along US coastlines.
Holland Renewable Energy Technologies, based at the RDM site in Rotterdam’s port area has offered an alternative for the port; by using its system to convert all the gas flared around the world into electricity, the company claims it could provide every household in a country the size of Germany or France with free power.
The Port of Long Beach said that solar panels have been installed in the port area to prevent 1,127 tons of carbon dioxide annually from polluting the environment. The port commits to sustainability with the installation of a 904.75kW Mitsubishi Electric photovoltaic (PV) system at the second-busiest seaport in the United States.
India’s largest container port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust will now harness solar energy and reduce its dependency on conventional electricity from the grid. JNPT is installing solar power plant on several rooftops in its township and commercial premises.
