Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has given his assent to the Suppression of Piracy and other Maritime Offences Bill of 2019, in an unprecedented move to enhance security on the country’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.

At the sixth session of its Sub-Committee on Implementation of IMO Instruments (III) on 1-5 July, the IMO has brought together flag, port and coastal States, together with observer delegations, to consider and finalize updates to key instruments which assist in implementation.

IMO informed that Peru has now acceded to an important IMO treaty helping to protect the marine environment. Namely, the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships Convention. The treaty prohibits the use of harmful organotins in anti-fouling paints and sets out a mechanism to prevent the potential future use of other harmful substances in anti-fouling systems.

MPA Singapore published a circular informing the industry on the application of BWM.2/Circ.70 on 'Guidance for the commissioning testing of ballast water management systems' for Singapore-registered ships. The target of the commissioning test is to verify that the mechanical, physical, chemical and biological processes of the installed BWMS are working efficiently.

According to the Canadian Government, the Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau, issued a statement based on unfortunate deaths of many North Atlantic right whales in Canadian waters; Because of this, he implemented a precautionary speed restriction of 10 knots, for vessels of 20 metres and more, that sail in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, in the two designated shipping lanes north and south of Anticosti Island. 

The UK became the first major economy in the world to pass laws to end its contribution to global warming by 2050. The target will mandate the UK to bring all GHG emissions to net zero by 2050, in comparison to the previous target of at least 80% reduction from 1990 levels.
