Philly Shipyard has initiated construction of up to four new, cost-effective and environmentally friendly containerships with deliveries in 2020 and 2021. It also plans to promote formation of a new entrant into the container ship trade between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii to operate these vessels. Presently, this trade route is serviced by only two carriers and is reliant in part on a group of near end-of-life steamships.

AIDAperla reached the port of Barcelona via the western Mediterranean, on June 7, as part of its "Welcome Cruises", to support Barcelona's environmental efforts. Before summer, the ship is going to be supplied with low-emission liquefied natural gas, while she is docked in the port, to reduce its emissions.

Kuehne + Nagel logistics announced that it has expanded sustainability in its global seafreight services, as it is going to print, on each invoice, the total amount of CO2 emissions generated by seafreight shipments, starting from May 2017. Heineken, Nedcargo and GoodFuels announced the launch of a joint pilot initiative, aiming to demonstrate the advantages of operating inland transport barges, using sustainable drop-in marine fuel. Under the project, the 104 TEU inland barge ‘For Ever’ will transport Heineken beer from Zoeterwoude to Rotterdam, fueled with 30% biofuel.

BC Ferries announced that it awarded Damen Shipyards Group of the Netherlands a contract to build two new minor class vessels, that are scheduled to go into service in 2020. The vessels will have a hybrid diesel electric - battery power generation and propulsion system, that uses on board electric battery power for its operation.

DNV GL has published a report assessing the potential for greenhouse gas emissions reduction from shipping towards 2050, based on a new computational model. The model can evaluate various scenarios for both individual ship segments and the industry as a whole. It can also evaluate the effectiveness of various solutions for reducing GHGs.
