Singapore's Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew says Singapore's Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said piracy remains a concern even though there has been progress in the fight against the threat.Mr Lui said recent events suggest an upswing in piracy incidents in Asia, but said on the positive side, the situation is not like that off the coast of Somalia.Most of the incidents in Asia are less serious and usually involve the theft of ship stores, spares and personal valuables.Mr Lui said Singapore does not take the threat of piracy lightly, and will continue to work closely with its partners in the international maritime community to combat this scourge.One of its most important partners is the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC).Mr Lui said it is the primary platform for anti-piracy cooperation between regional governments for the timely exchange of information and sharper operational capabilities.He said the ISC's value in countering piracy has been recognised with new members coming on board. Commitment to combat piracy and armed robbery Singapore MPA reaffirms its commitment to international co-operation to combat piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia, as Mr Lam Yi Young, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Mr Yoshihisa Endo, Executive Director of the Regional Co-operation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre (ISC) signed a Headquarters Agreement by which Singapore renewed its commitment to host the ReCAAP ISC for another five years.The signing of the new Headquarters Agreement took place on the sidelines of the 6th ReCAAP ISC Governing Council Meeting this morning. It was witnessed by Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, and VADM Edmund Tan, Chairperson of the ReCAAP ISC Governing Council, Philippines Governor to ReCAAP ISC. VADM Edmund Tan is also the Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard."As a global hub port and a major flag state, Singapore is committed to combating piracy and armed robbery at sea. Trends and assessments of piracy and sea robbery in Asia The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre issued the Report of the 2011 Piracy & Sea Robbery Conference, jointly sponsored by ReCAAP, the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO), the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners (INTERTANKO), the NATO Shipping Centre, and the S. During the period March-June 2011 The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre issued a Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Special Report on hijacked/missing tug boats and barges in Asia during the period March-June 2011.Five potential incidents were reported, but only three could be confirmed as constituting piracy (one incident) or armed robbery against ships (two incidents). In the first incident, the tug boat and barge remain missing. In the second incident, the barge was found and the crew rescued, but the tug boat remains missing.In the third incident, both the tug boat and barge were recovered and the crew was rescued. Owners and masters of tug boats in Southeast Asia are advised to exercise caution (particularly where the tug boat is relatively new)Source: ReCAAP
