ReCAAP ISC has issued a special report to inform about latest incidents in which crew was abducted from tug boats in waters off East Sabah and South Philippines and to provide advice to the industry in order to avoid related incident in the future.

ReCAAP ISC has issued its report of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia from January to May 2016. During this period, ReCAAP ISC notes improvement in the situation compared to the same period in 2015. A total of 14 incidents of robbery on board ships were reported during January-March 2016 compared to 44 incidents of piracy and robbery during January-March 2015.

ReCAAP ISC has created an infographic to depict the reported data of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia from January to May 2016. During this period neither hijacking of tankers for theft of oil cargo was reported (since September 2015) nor unauthorized boarding of ships while underway in Singapore Straits (since December 2015)

Singapore has reaffirmed the instrumental role ReCAAP has played in anti-piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia on the occasion of the ReCAAP 10th Governing Council meeting.

According to ReCAAP ISC latest report, the number of incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia reported in February 2016 is the lowest among the 12-months period. No piracy incident and incidents involving oil cargo theft were reported.

Piracy and armed robbery in the Asian region has been evolving over time. Piracy and armed robbery in Asia differs significantly from that of Somalia-based piracy. While Somalian-based pirates generally attacked ships in order to hijack them and then hold the crew for ransom, the type of criminal activity occurring in Asian waters generally revolves around theft of personal property and hijacking of ships for the purpose of cargo theft. A new regional guide was jointly published to help operators avoiding attacks of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia.

A total of nine actual incidents of armed robbery against ships were reported in Asia during January 2016. No piracy incident was reported. The number of incidents in January 2016 has shown a slight increase compared to November and December 2015; but compared to January 2015, there has been a decrease. Refer to Graph 1 on the number of incidents reported every month between January 2015 and January 2016.

A total of 200 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships (comprising 187 actual incidents and 13 attempted incidents) were reported to the ReCAAP ISC in 2015. Of these, 11 were acts of piracy and 189 were incidents of armed robbery against ships. Compared to 2014, there has been a 7% increase in total number of incidents in 2015

ReCAAP ISC reports a 7% increase in number during 2015 (compared with 2014) in its Annual Report of Piracy and Armed Robbery against ships in Asia. ReCAAP ISC comments that with more perpetrators being put to task, the overall situation in Asia is heading for improvement.

ReCAAP Information Sharing Center has issued its Monthly Report for November 2015 on Piracy and Armed Robbery against ships in Asia. The report reveals an improvement in the situation of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia for a consecutive three-month period since September 2015.
