In its weekly report for 8-14 January 2019, ReCAAP ISC said it has not received any incident of piracy or armed robbery against ships in Asia. However, the report includes an incident of armed robbery outside Asia, involving a tanker anchored in West African waters. 

The 2017 Annual Report of the International Maritime Bureau reported a decrease in piracy incidents globally with 180 reported incidents in 2017, down from 191 in 2016 and 246 in 2015. On the other hand, ReCAAP ISC reported that, in Asia, there was a 19% increase in the number of piracy incidents in 2017 in comparison to 2016.

ReCAAP ISC published its annual report 'Piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia', addressing that piracy and armed robbery have experienced a decrease by 25%. Additionally, the number of actual incidents showed a reduction of 31%. To this result, the number of incidents remains at a low level, in comparison to previous years. There was no actual incident of hijacking of ships for oil cargo theft in 2018.

According to ReCAAP ISC, during 25-31 December 2018, one incident of piracy of the Malaysian tug boat,'Magtrans II' occurred, off Tambisan Island, Sabah, East Malaysia. In addition the report presents information on how the incident took place.

ReCAAP ISC, concerning crew abduction in Sulu-Celebes seas and waters off Eastern Sabah provides updated information on the situation of abduction in the report 'Regional Cooperation Agreement to Combat Piracy and Armed Robbery against ships in Asia'.

In its weekly report for the period of 11-17 December, the ReCAAP ISC informed it received no reports of incident of piracy or armed robbery against ships in Asia. However, the ReCAAP Focal Point (UK) reported an incident of attempted piracy outside Asia, involving a crude oil tanker while sailing southeast of Bab Al Mendeb Strait, on 13 December. 

In its weekly report for 4-10 December, ReCAAP ISC informed of one incident of abduction of crew and one incident of robbery against a ship in Asia. The first incident was reported in Celebes Sea, at vicinity waters of Tambisan, Lahad Datu, Sabah. The second incident involved the Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier 'Glovis Maple' while at anchor at Cam Pha Anchorage, Vietnam.

On 5 December, around 20 men, who are believed to be from the Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf Group, armed with firearms, boarded the boat from speed boats painted green with grey, and powered with double engine. They abducted three crew, one Malaysian and two Indonesians.

In its monthly piracy report for November, ReCAAP ISC informed of a total of three incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia. Of these, one was a piracy incident and two were armed robberies at ports/anchorages. The total number of incidents against ships in Asia during January-November 2018 has decreased by 15% compared to the same period in 2017.

In its weekly report for 27 November- 3 December, ReCAAP ISC informed of one incident of armed robbery against ship in Asia, involving the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier 'Alpha Bulker' while at anchor in Cam Pha loading anchorage, Vietnam. While at anchor, about seven perpetrators (not armed) pretended to be stevedores and boarded the bulk carrier.
