The Port of New Orleans set a new container volume record in 2018, handling 591.253 twenty-foot equivalent units, experiencing an increase of 12.3% year-on-year. The record highlights the fifth consequent year that the Port has exceeded the half million TEUs as its Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal, which is operated by New Orleans Terminal and Ports America.

Australian's Pilbara Ports Authority has cleared major Port of Rio Tinto as part of cyclone operations. The Authority addressed that ports of Ashburton, Dampier and Port Hedland were under preparations for tropical cyclone 'Riley', which was offshore of northern Western Australia.

The Port of Wilmington, Delaware, has loaded its first shipment of new Ford vehicles, welcoming the Alliance St. Louis. As part of the vessel’s multiyear contract, this journey is one of between 3-4 per month outlined in the contract. The vessel was loaded on January 7 for it’s final destination in the Middle East.

The Port of Charleston, in South Carolina, aspires to place freight that comes in on the water, back on the water with a container-on-barge service, which is expected to be online as early as 2022. The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) submitted applications to state and federal regulators on December to build and dredge for a new wharf at the Wando Welch container terminal.

South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal informed earlier this week that 2018 coal exports decreased to 73.47 million tonnes from its record high of 76.47 million tonnes in 2017, due to less exports to South Korea. Namely, Africa’s largest coal export facility was aimed to export at least 77 million tonnes of coal in 2019, reaching its 2018 target.

According to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), all parts of Britain will experience economic difficulties in case of a No-Deal Brexit. Namely, if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, then it will suffer an economic loss which may last until 2034. The CBI noted that the North East of England region would receive the hardest hit, as it would lose 10.5% of its real gross value added.

More ships than ever are switching to landside electricity at the Port of Oakland to cut emissions. According to the Port, 75% of all ships visiting in 2018 used so-called shore power. That was up from 68% the year before. Specifically, 1,543 ships tied up in Oakland during 2018. Of those, 1,157 plugged into the landside grid to power onboard systems.

British Ports Association responds to Odgers Berndston survey 'Brexit, Business Leaders and Investment'. The survey focuses on UK's preparedness for Brexit and in the possibility of a no-deal scenario. The British Ports Association has suggested ports and terminals are considering a range of potential outcomes. The uncertainty has made it difficult for ports to make firm investment decisions in potential solutions.

Drewry's Container Port Throughput Indices are a series of volume growth or decline indices based on monthly throughput data for a sample of over 220 ports worldwide, representing over 75% of global volumes. The base point for the indices is January 2012 = 100.

Pilbara Ports Authority reported a new record tonnage on a single tide at the Port of Hedland. Namely, on 15 January 2019, 10 vessels left the port in convoy carrying a total of 1,754,741 tonnes of bulk product, surpassing the previous record from December 2017 by 165,680 tonnes. Before that, an Expression of Interest has been completed for the building and operation of a new general cargo facility at the Port of Port Hedland.
