New Zealand's Ports of Auckland announced the signing of a contract with Dutch company Damen Shipyards to buy the world's first full-size, fully electric port tug. This comes in line with the port's commitment to be zero emission by 2040, as previously announced. 

The Ports of Auckland informed that it plans to launch a staged automation process, beginning with its Northern Berth which is due to start in February 2020. The port aspires to complete the infrastructure work, which is needed to apply automation, during 2019.

In a first for Auckland, Ports of Auckland revealed plans to build a hydrogen production and refueling facility at its Waitematā port. Under the project, the company along with its project partners will invest in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles including port equipment, buses and cars. The project is part of the Ports' ambitious target to be a zero emission port by 2040.

A total of six crews from the Auckland city area spent six hours in dampening a coal cargo after a fire erupted on the bulk carrier 'Liangchow' at Freyberg wharf, New Zealand, on Monday. Auckland's fire brigade received a call about smoke coming from the ship at 9.20am.

Port of Auckland informed that a battery-powered truck has entered the port's fleet for the first time, testing the feasibility of zero-emission freight hauling. It’s the only electric truck alongside more than 6,000 diesel-powered vehicles registered at the Port.

The study selected cruise ships, as the cruise industry has been proactive at addressing environmental issues over the past decade and these vessels are more frequently fitted with the on-board infrastructure required. This, along with high individual electricity demand while at berth is expected to increase utilisation.

To achieve this goal, Ports of Auckland cooperated with Enviro-Mark Solutions and are using the Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme in order to measure and manage the greenhouse gas emissions. Ports of Auckland is the first port in New Zealand to become a CEMARS certified organisation.
