Sri Lanka's Port of Colombo is the world's top port with the highest container growth for the first half of 2018, according to a Sri Lanka's Ports and Shipping Ministry statement. Namely, the Port of Colombo has grew by 15.6% in container handling for the first half of 2018, out of the top 30 global ports.

In 2017, the Port of Barcelona recorded its best results yet in cargo handling as it seeks to become the fastest-growing European port. Total traffic (including all cargo modes) surpassed 61 million tonnes for the first time, recording a year-on-year increase of 26%.

For the period from April-August 2018, nine Ports: Kolkata (incl. Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Deendayal have registered positive growth in traffic. The highest growth was registered by Kamarajar Port with 17.24%.

Container volumes at the Port of Long Beach dropped by 1.9% in August compared to the same month the year before. Namely, a total of 679,543 twenty-foot equivalent units were moved through the Port. This is contrary to August 2017, which was one of the busiest months in the Port of Long Beach’s history.

Chinese Cosco Shipping Ports (CSP) has set its eyes to make the Port of Piraeus, Greece's major port, the largest port in the Mediterranean in one and a half years, at the same time that freight traffic is expected to increase by 35% within this year only. 

The Port of Long Beach is continuing to outperform 2023 clean air goals, with a drop in diesel particulates by 88%, sulfur oxides by 97% and nitrogen oxides by 56% since 2005, even though cargo volumes have jumped to record levels, according to the port's annual “emissions inventory” for 2017.

After setting a 107-year record in container handling volumes in June, the Port of Long Beach saw a 4.4% decline in container volumes in July compared to the same month a year ago. The port attributed the drop to shipping alliances’ decisions in July to shift vessel deployment and port calls.

Port Houston moved 1.3 million container TEUs through the first six months of 2018, a 6% increase from 2017, Executive Director Roger Guenther announced in his report to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority in its regular monthly meeting held Tuesday.

Transshipment in the North Sea Canal Area at the seaports Amsterdam, IJmuiden, Beverwijk and Zaanstad declined to 49.4 million tonnes in the first half of 2018, a decrease of 5.1%, while the Port of Amsterdam saw transshipment fall by 4.8% to 40.2 million tonnes.

In its recently-published figures for the first half of 2018, the port of Rotterdam reported a throughput of 232.8 million tonnes, which is 2.2% less than in the first six months of 2017. Container throughput rose by 5.9% in tonnes compared with the first six months of 2017, including a new throughput record in May.
