The Northwest Seaport Alliance, a marine cargo operating partnership of the US ports of Tacoma and Seattle, handled a record of 775,522 TEUs for total international container volumes in the first quarter of 2019, a 12% increase over the same period last year.

Port of Rotterdam shared figures for the first quarter of 2019, noting 5.1% more freight passed through the Port than in the same period last year. In total, 123.9 million tonnes were handled compared with 117.8 million tonnes in the same period in 2018.

Container throughput in ports of Latin America and the Caribbean increased by 7.7% in 2018 compared to 2017, according to data provided by UN ECLAC. This analysis is based on the performance of a sampling of 31 countries and 118 ports and port areas in the region.

Short sea container services between the UK and EU could provide alternative capacity to alleviate possible congestion at the Port of Dover post-Brexit, according to a study by global shipping consultancy Drewry. These latest findings follow an earlier study by Drewry.

Volume growth is expected to continue for ports worldwide, but at a more modest pace over the next 10 years, said Fitch Ratings in a new report. An increase in protectionist trade policies, shifts in centers of production, and the advent of disruptive technologies are all factors which add complexity in future throughput.

Chile’s Puerto Coronel announced it has received two new container cranes on Monday, expected to boost the port's infrastructure capacity. The two new units will make Coronel the first port of the Biobío region to operate four container cranes. 

The annual throughput of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Port increased to 2,301,595 TEUs by the end of 2018, an increase of more than 36% compared to 2017, maintaining its position as the second largest port in the Kingdom in terms of container handling.

Belgium's Port of Antwerp issued its annual figures for 2018 revealing growth in all cargo types, as well as a major wave of investments. With a growth of 5.2% compared to 2017, the forecasts for a 6th consecutive year record were confirmed. The total transshipment in 2018 was 235.2 million tonnes.

The Port of Helsinki noted a record year in 2018, with a total of 14.7 million tonnes of goods, noting an increase of 3.3% compared to the previous year, while it maintained its position as the busiest passenger port in Europe, with a higher than ever number of international cruise tourists. 

The major ports of India together handled 518.6 million tonnes of cargo during the period April to December 2018, compared to 499.7 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year, noting a growth of 3.77%.
