The Port of Rotterdam Authority announced the launch of the World Ports Climate Action Program. In this initiative, the port authorities of Hamburg, Barcelona, Antwerp, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Vancouver and Rotterdam will work together on a number of projects that address the issue of global warming.

The Port of Vancouver announced that it will implement temporary and voluntary 15-knot speed restriction for tier 2 vessels in First Narrows Traffic Control Zone. The speed restriction will be in effect between July 6 and October 1, 2018. The voluntary 15-knot speed restriction aims to help keep port users safe.

When vessels slow down, underwater noise is reduced, and so does the impact on whales, according to a Vessel Slowdown Trial led by the Port of Vancouver's ECHO Program. Whales use sound to locate prey and ship noise can interfere with their ability to do this.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority celebrated the arrival of the 25 millionth cruise passenger through the Port. To mark the occasion, the port authority hosted a celebration at Canada Place. In 2018, more than 895,000 passengers are expected on 241 vessel visits in Vancouver, a 7% increase in passenger volumes.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority released the 2017 statistics for cargo through the Port. According to them overall cargo volume through the port reached a new record of 142.1 million tonnes. Sectors that presented the biggest growth were containers and bulk grain.

Metro Vancouver often has to deal with a thick fog in this season, which can be proven as one of the most dangerous conditions for marine navigation due to low visibility. The 'old technology' of loud foghorns seems still a necessary maritime safety measure in the port, to demonstrate safety is not for granted. 

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has released its third Port Emissions Inventory report, which indicates air pollutant emissions have decreased significantly since 2010, as a result of stronger regulation and investment in technology, despite an increase in trade through the port.

Montreal Port Authority recently reported that its shore power initiatives are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by some 2,800 tonnes a year. Due to the proven environmental benefits of shore power, Canada’s largest port, the Port of Vancouver, is also taking steps to develop shore power infrastructure.

The Port of Vancouver urges operators to take into consideration boating safety rules, considering that the port is a busy harbour and especially during this period, the marine recreational activities are increased. 

The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority informed that the construction on the New Brighton Park Shoreline Habitat Restoration Project was completed, with final landscaping, native plant installations around the wetland and park feature construction activities wrapped up in early July.
