On January 28, an STS crane fell onto the container vessel 'Ever Summit' as the ship docked at the port of Vancouver's global container terminal. The crane's boom came down on top of several shipping containers that were stacked seven high on the vessel, partially crushing some of them. The boom was left bent and warped with a mess of mangled yellow guard rails, according to local sources.

Port of Vancouver published its 'Port Information Guide' focusing on practises and procedures applicable to all vessels operating  within defined vessel operating areas in the port authority’s jurisdiction to support the safe and efficient movement of trade. The port authority makes amendments, in accordance with Section 56 of the Canada Marine Act.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has completed a shore power project to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution by enabling ships to shut down their diesel engines and connect to an electrical grid supplied by renewable energy sources. The system was successfully commissioned and connected to the first ship in October.

Port of Vancouver in order to ensure safety informs that thick fog and fog patches are common at this time of year and there is a high chance of restricted visibility. Therefore, the port reminds the regulations that require anchored ships to sound every minute and moving ships to sound every two minutes as it is written on Rule 35 of Collision Regulations of Canada Shipping Act of 2001.

The Port of Vancouver has completed a shore power facility, which will enable ships to shut down their diesel engines and connect to an electrical grid supplied by renewable energy sources. The Shore Power Technology for Ports program, Canada and the Port of Vancouver have contributed $3.5 million to the Centerm project, for a total investment of $7 million.

As part of its measures to protect endangered whale populations, Transport Canada will be working with multiple partners on the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s Enhancing Cetacean Habitat and Observation (ECHO) program which is looking at ways to reduce underwater noise in key areas where there are Southern Resident Killer Whales.

The Port of Vancouver announced the end of the cruise season, as the last cruise ship, 'Emerald Princess', departed from the Port today (October 19), heading to LA and then Hawaii.  The 'Star Princess' was the ship that started the 2018 season. The 2019 cruise ship season will start with the arrival of the 'Emerald Princess' on March 29.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority announced it is extending the voluntary 15-knot speed reduction through the First Narrows that was introduced in July, to ensure safety of all boaters operating in port waters. The voluntary slowdown applies to all tier 2 vessels, which includes any vessel not under pilotage.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority announced the launch of the World Ports Climate Action Program. In this initiative, the port authorities of Hamburg, Barcelona, Antwerp, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Vancouver and Rotterdam will work together on a number of projects that address the issue of global warming.

The Port of Vancouver announced that it will implement temporary and voluntary 15-knot speed restriction for tier 2 vessels in First Narrows Traffic Control Zone. The speed restriction will be in effect between July 6 and October 1, 2018. The voluntary 15-knot speed restriction aims to help keep port users safe.
