The World Ocean Council (WOC) has convened the key green and sustainable shipping programs at several of the annual WOC Sustainable Ocean Summit (SOS) events in order to foster and facilitate communication among the programs and stimulate coordination.

Canada's Vancouver Fraser Port Authority became the first North American port and the fourth port in general to join SEA\LNG, the industry coalition aiming to accelerate the widespread adoption of LNG as a marine fuel. The Port Authority and British Columbia have shed efforts to drive further use of natural gas in Canada.

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä’s EnergoProFin, an energy saving propeller cap, which delivers average fuel savings of 2%, has been listed in the 2019 Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s EcoAction Program. The Program provides harbour dues discounts for vessels calling on the Port of Vancouver that meet environmental best practices.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has expanded its industry-leading EcoAction Program, encouraging vessels that call on the Port of Vancouver to quiet the waters for the endangered whale population along the southern coast of British Columbia. Specifically, the program got into force on January 1, 2019. 

A British Columbia court has acquitted the Panamax bulk carrier 'Marathassa' on all charges, over its spill of 2,700 litres of bunker fuel into Vancouver's English Bay in April 2015, attributing the incident to manufacturing flaws and not to company negligence. 

On January 28, an STS crane fell onto the container vessel 'Ever Summit' as the ship docked at the port of Vancouver's global container terminal. Now the crane is being removed and the vessel will depart from Canada tomorrow morning. Specifically, the vessel is set to voyage and complete its discharge of boxes on February 6, 2018. 

After an STS crane fell onto a container ship in Port of Vancouver, on January 28, two floating cranes were deployed to move it. Currently, ship operations are paused at the Global Container Terminals Vanterm facility, but rail and truck-gate operations are continuing. Global Container Terminals Vanterm stated that no injuries occurred and the situation remains stable.

On January 28, an STS crane fell onto the container vessel 'Ever Summit' as the ship docked at the port of Vancouver's global container terminal. The crane's boom came down on top of several shipping containers that were stacked seven high on the vessel, partially crushing some of them. The boom was left bent and warped with a mess of mangled yellow guard rails, according to local sources.

Port of Vancouver published its 'Port Information Guide' focusing on practises and procedures applicable to all vessels operating  within defined vessel operating areas in the port authority’s jurisdiction to support the safe and efficient movement of trade. The port authority makes amendments, in accordance with Section 56 of the Canada Marine Act.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has completed a shore power project to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and air pollution by enabling ships to shut down their diesel engines and connect to an electrical grid supplied by renewable energy sources. The system was successfully commissioned and connected to the first ship in October.
