A chemical leak was reported onboard a containership arriving at the Port of Tauranga on September 4. No injuries were reported.

Following a power failure of the Singapore-flagged bulker "Funing", the vessel is about to be towed into the Port of Tauranga, on the north island of New Zealand. 

The Judiciary Police of Portugal, in collaboration with the Portuguese Navy and Air Force has in recent days triggered an operation to combat illicit traffic in narcotic drugs by sea, which resulted in the interception , in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, of a container carrier that was being used to transport high amounts of cocaine.

The New Zealand police seized the country’s largest ever shipment of cocaine which arrived to the port of Tauranga from Chile on Tuesday 31 October, with the crime syndicate approaching the vessel and retrieving the cocaine from a hidden compartment on the exterior of the hull.

Port of Tauranga marked a new record of more than one million twenty foot equivalent units processed in a year, cementing its position as the busiest container port in New Zealand. Port of Tauranga handles more than 20 million tonnes of cargo annually, including 41% of the country’s exports.

The New Zealand’s largest freight gateway, Port of Tauranga, announced it is on track to become the first port in the country to transport more than one million containers across its wharves in a single year.

Port of Tauranga has examined every aspect of its landside operations to ensure it is able to handle the much larger transfers of cargo required when servicing larger vessels. Port’s shipping channels have now been widened and deepened, to 14.5 metres inside the harbour entrance and 15.8 metres outside the harbour.
