Port of Seattle to adopt principles limiting facial recognition

According to a statement, the Port of Seattle became the first port in the United States to adopt principles with the aim to ensure that implementation of public-facing facial recognition technology is clearly justified, equitable, and transparent. Namely, commissioners created a working group, which aims to develop these principles into policies that can be clearly enforced and measured by March 31, 2020. In addition to this, no biometric technology shall be implemented at Port facilities until Commissioners formally consider working group recommendations and develop relevant policy by June 30, 2020.

Washington’s first maritime accelerator to be launched

Washington Maritime Blue, the Port of Seattle and WeWork Labs have collaborated to launch Washington’s first maritime accelerator to help maritime companies innovate and grow. The accelerator, which is currently accepting applications through November 18, aims to help maritime companies innovate and grow, establish Washington as a leader in maritime innovation, and increase the sustainability of maritime businesses in both Seattle and beyond.

Port of Seattle announces shortlist for new cruise terminal project

The Port of Seattle announced the shortlisted companies to proceed in the process towards choosing a partner in the development and operation of a new cruise facility at the north end of Terminal 46. The Port concluded to three companies. The three teams responded to the Port’s Request for Qualifications issued in March and will now be invited to respond to a Request for Proposals, which is expected to be released in June.

Port of Seattle adopts plan to improve sustainability

The Port of Seattle adopted its workplan for the Energy and Sustainability Committee on April 23. The Port identified four areas of focus to improve environmental and community health in Puget Sound and tackle climate change. These are a more sustainable aviation; Sustainable Project Framework Resolution; development of the Port’s Waterfront Clean Energy Strategic Plan; Maritime Blue Maritime Inspiration Awards; and environmental stewardship into New Cruise Terminal.
