The impacts of climate change on our businesses, communities and environment are increasingly apparent and need to be addressed decisively. For this reason, the Port of Seattle urged for a continued progress toward securing enactment of a statewide Clean Fuels Standard by advancing E2SHB 1110.

According to a statement, the Port of Seattle became the first port in the United States to adopt principles with the aim to ensure that implementation of public-facing facial recognition technology is clearly justified, equitable, and transparent. Namely, commissioners created a working group, which aims to develop these principles into policies that can be clearly enforced and measured by March 31, 2020. In addition to this, no biometric technology shall be implemented at Port facilities until Commissioners formally consider working group recommendations and develop relevant policy by June 30, 2020.

Washington Maritime Blue, the Port of Seattle and WeWork Labs have collaborated to launch Washington’s first maritime accelerator to help maritime companies innovate and grow. The accelerator, which is currently accepting applications through November 18, aims to help maritime companies innovate and grow, establish Washington as a leader in maritime innovation, and increase the sustainability of maritime businesses in both Seattle and beyond.

The Port of Seattle, Port of Tacoma, Northwest Seaport Alliance, Washington State Ferries, NOAA, and the Puget Sound Partnership gathered along with experts and shipping stakeholders to address ways to reduce noise pollution in efforts to protect the endangered population of Southern Resident killer whales.

US West Coast's six largest ports sent a letter to US President Donald Trump alerting about the impacts of the trade war between the US and China, adding that the escalating tension will affect ports' economies, workers, residents and international partnerships.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance along with the the International Longshore and Warehouse Workers of Local 19, and SSA Terminals, broke ground on July 10 at Terminal 5, marking the first concrete steps in making the facility able to accommodate large ships, adding the capability to handle two of the shipping industry's largest container vessels at the same time.  

The Port of Seattle announced the shortlisted companies to proceed in the process towards choosing a partner in the development and operation of a new cruise facility at the north end of Terminal 46. The Port concluded to three companies. The three teams responded to the Port’s Request for Qualifications issued in March and will now be invited to respond to a Request for Proposals, which is expected to be released in June.

The Port of Seattle adopted its workplan for the Energy and Sustainability Committee on April 23. The Port identified four areas of focus to improve environmental and community health in Puget Sound and tackle climate change. These are a more sustainable aviation; Sustainable Project Framework Resolution; development of the Port’s Waterfront Clean Energy Strategic Plan; Maritime Blue Maritime Inspiration Awards; and environmental stewardship into New Cruise Terminal.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance, a marine cargo operating partnership of the US ports of Tacoma and Seattle, handled a record of 775,522 TEUs for total international container volumes in the first quarter of 2019, a 12% increase over the same period last year.

The Port of Seattle, celebrating 20 years as a homeport, welcomes the 2019 cruise season with the arrival of the first ship—Celebrity Eclipse, at the Bell Street Pier Cruise Terminal at Pier 66. The Port expects an estimated 1,208,590 revenue cruise passengers this year, breaking last year’s record of 1,114,888.
