The new normal is now ports turning to digitalization and technology to continue operations and trade flow, due to the COVID-19 measures and the global lockdown. The report includes smart steps to be taken so that the industry adapts to the new reality.

Canada's Port of Montreal revealed plans to leverage the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI), using a new predictive tool to optimize port logistics. The tool is expected to improve the port's operational planning by positively impacting the transit times for containerized cargo in the supply chain, especially for rail freight.

The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) informed that 2019 was a sixth consecutive record year in terms of tonnes of goods handled. The total volume of goods reached 40.6 million tonnes, up 4.3% from 2018.

The Montreal Port Authority launched an upgrade of the Trucking PORTaI application, which helps port truck drivers plan their routes better and also enhances the traffic flow on port territory, playing a major role in reducing GHG emissions.

Port of Montreal announced via its Twitter account that it renewed its cooperation agreement with port of Antwerp. Port of Montreal and Antwerp have been collaborating for six years; The first cooperation agreement between the two ports was signed in 2013 for three years and got renewed in 2016.

The Montreal Port Authority and Logistec Corporation announced that Viau Terminal, which handles about 350,000 containers annually, will undergo a new construction phase to increase its handling capacity. This would be its second phase, after the first one was completed in 2016. The new phase will make it possible to add 250,000 TEUs to Viau Terminal’s current capacity, bringing it to 600,000 TEUs.

Valenciaport and the Port of Montreal have been integrated into Maersk and IBM’s TradeLens project, a technological solution to apply blockchain to the global supply chain. According to the data collected by the system itself, the use of TradeLens allows to reduce the transit time of a shipment by 40%, which represents an important economic saving.

The Port of Montreal announced that it handled about 38 million tonnes of freight in 2017. This is a historic record for the Port of Montreal, as the figure represents an increase of almost 7% in cargo traffic. 

Montreal Port Authority recently reported that its shore power initiatives are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by some 2,800 tonnes a year. Due to the proven environmental benefits of shore power, Canada’s largest port, the Port of Vancouver, is also taking steps to develop shore power infrastructure.

The Montreal Port Authority announced that its shore power project has been completed and that vessels docking at the Port of Montreal’s new cruise terminal can now be powered by electricity. This two-pronged project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2,800 tonnes per year.
