The Port of Los Angeles is moving ahead with an automation project for Pier 400, the port's largest terminal, after the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and APM Terminals agreed to set up a workforce training program to prepare workers for the jobs of the future. 

The US Port of Los Angeles announced that June 2019 was the busiest June in the Port’s 112-year history, moving 764,777 TEUs. Six months into 2019, overall volumes have increased 5.3% compared to 2018, when the Port set an all-time cargo record.

APM Terminals has in its plans to add electric automated straddle carriers to its Pier 400 facility in the Port of Los Angeles. This move has raised protests by longshore union leaders, who asked the city's council to intervene, as they believe that longshoremen will lose hundreds of shifts per day, because of the new technology.

The Port of Los Angeles issued a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, commenting that the impacts that will come from the proposed tariffs include higher consumer prices, lower profitability for American firms, and uncertainty in the maritime supply chain.

According to Port of Los Angeles' statement, it moved 828,662 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in May, the busiest May in the Port’s 112-year history. The volumes reflect growth of 7.8% in comparison to the same period last year.

Policy, process management, and investment are considered the key challenges for cross-border activity, according to Gene Seroka, Executive Director, Port of Los Angeles. He explained that the Port of LA has seen a large amount of imports over the last year, but its exports were reduced due to retaliatory tariffs.

Foss Maritime's Michele Foss departed the Port of Everett on Wednesday, May 15, sailing to Port of Los Angeles to pick up two gantry cranes for use at the Port’s modernized South Terminal. The $57 million South Terminal Modernization project will ensure the Port’s facilities are ready to support the next generation of over-dimensional cargo, including aerospace parts for the new 777X.

Because of an industrial accident in the Port of Los Angeles, a worker died and another has been seriously injured. The workers were members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). Los Angeles Port Police along with California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal-OSHA) and the U.S. Coast Guard have begun an investigation into the accident.

Port of Los Angeles convened a conducted a working group consisting of maritime stakeholders to discuss the creation of a cyber-resilience industry, boosting cooperation and helping manage cyber security threats. The centre will be a collaborative effort to fight cyber threats across many companies within the port complex.

The Port of Los Angeles, Toyota, Kenworth, and the California Air Resources Board took the next step towards the future of zero-emission trucking, presenting fuel cell electric heavy-duty trucks. The Port of Los Angeles will develop the project in numerous phases, incorporating initiatives in Southern California, the Central Coast Area, and Merced County.
