CARB approves new pollution-scrubbing technology for Port of Long Beach

The California Air Resources Board has approved a new technology by a Carson-based company that uses specialized barges which connect to the exhaust ports of container ships to scrub pollution. In 2013, the Port of Long Beach provided about $2 million in seed money to help test the Advanced Maritime Emissions Control System, or AMECS. Advanced Cleanup Technologies Inc. (ACTI) can now market AMECS to vessel operators as an alternative to container ships plugging into the electrical grid to reduce emissions while at berth.Container and cruise ships must significantly reduce at-berth emissions to meet state regulations, but the existing “shore power” option requires retrofits to each vessel. According to ACTI, the AMECS barge system can meet the state standards by removing 90 to 99 percent of harmful emissions of nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and particulate matter without requiring vessel retrofits. With an emissions inventory released this month showing already record-low pollution levels at the Port of Long Beach, officials hailed the regulatory approval as another option to advance the Port’s environmental goals to near-zero and zero emission levels.“We’re thrilled any time we can find more tools to reduce emissions and continue to improve community health. That’s why we fund projects like the ...

Port of Long Beach improves air quality

The Port of Long Beach announced that has  surpassed every air pollution reduction milestone set for 2014 by the landmark San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan, according to an analysis released. An annual, comprehensive inventory of port-related air pollution emissions in 2014 found the Port’s efforts to reduce pollution have cut diesel particulates by 85 percent since 2005, surpassing the CAAP goal for 2014 of a 72 percent reduction. In addition to the drop in diesel emissions, smog-forming nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides have dropped 50 percent and 97 percent respectively. The corresponding goals for the year are 22 percent and 93 percent. The reasons for the air quality improvements include the Clean Trucks Program, low-sulfur fuel regulations for ships, increased use of shore power for cargo ships and the Port’s Green Flag Vessel Speed Reduction Program.“The Port of Long Beach remains the greenest Port in the world, reducing emissions while increasing economic activity,” Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia said.“The Port’s consistent commitment to sustainability and our environment should be celebrated.”“When the Clean Air Action Plan was adopted almost 10 years ago, the Port made a promise to the community to reduce air pollution and to be a better neighbor,” said ...

Ports update Clean Air Action Plan

Environmental teams from the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach will hold a joint community workshop on October 14 to gather input on the next update of the Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP). Initially adopted in 2006 and updated in 2010, this historic environmental plan called for aggressive strategies that have proved highly effective in reducing air pollution from port-related sources. The Clean Air Action Plan Update Community Workshop will be held 3-5 p.m., Oct. 14, 2015, at Banning’s Landing Community Center, 100 E. Water St., Wilmington, 90744. The workshop is open to the public.Since its adoption, the CAAP has resulted in unprecedented reductions in air pollution from the ships, trains, trucks, terminal equipment and harbor craft that operate in and around the ports. Over the past decade, levels of diesel particulate matter have dropped 82 percent, oxides of nitrogen fell 54 percent and oxides of sulfur have declined 90 percent due largely to pollution-reducing strategies implemented under the plan. The Ports envisioned the CAAP as a “living document,” and have periodically reviewed and updated it. In recent months, the ports have started gathering input from multiple stakeholders. The workshop will include a presentation outlining the scope and timeline ...
