Aggressively deploying zero and near-zero emission trucks and cargo-handling equipment and expanding programs that reduce ship emissions are among the core strategies the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are proposing for eliminating all harmful air pollution from port-related sources.

The Port of Long Beach, a gateway for trans-­Pacific trade and a trailblazer in goods movement and environmental stewardship recently announced that the container volumes in October were down 6.2 percent compared to the same month last year, as the fallout from the Hanjin bankruptcy continues to settle.

The governing boards of the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach have announced that they will hold a joint public meeting on November 17 to discuss proposals for updating the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP), which outlines the ports’ plans for expanding the aggressive strategies that have succeeded in dramatically reducing air pollution from port-related sources over the last decade.

Maersk Line and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are partnering to measure the environmental benefits of a $125 million upgrade for 12 Maersk container ships. This will involve the installation of high-tech equipment to track vessel emissions and energy efficiency over the next three years, enabling more transparency and ultimately reducing the environmental impact of vessels calling at the San Pedro Bay port complex.

The Port of Long Beach has said that it is helping to clear a significant backlog of empty cargo containers from Southern California and free up the chassis they sit on, as part of an agreement with terminal operator Total Terminals International (TTI) to bring in a container ship to remove up to 4,300 empty containers.

Carnival Cruise Line will expand capacity in two key markets with Carnival Miracle operating seven-day Caribbean cruises from Tampa and Carnival Splendor offering week-long Mexican Riviera cruises from Long Beach, Calif., beginning in 2018.

Carnival has signed an agreement to expand the Long Beach Cruise Terminal facility in order to accommodate larger ships in the future and enhance technology enabling cruise ships to plug into the local electric grid and reducing exhaust emissions while docked.

Port of Long Beach container volumes declined 16.6 percent year-over-year in September. The number of containers handled during September was impacted not only by reduced calls by Hanjin-operated ships, but also by the absence of Hanjin containers on vessels.

The Port of Long Beach and Long Beach Container Terminal have received the Clean Air Award for working to reduce pollution in Southern California with the Middle Harbor redevelopment project.

Pollution around the Port of Long Beach has been dramatically cut over the last decade, however, according to the latest study, lingering effects from ships at anchor in early 2015 impacted air quality last year
