As the global clean-fuel started to coming into effect from 1st of January, several tests have been carried out by AmSpec Services along with a unit of Lloyd’s Register. Specifically the testing companies examined newer, low-sulfur marine blends acquired in Antwerp, Belgium, Houston and Singapore.

The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority has moved to accelerate widening of the Houston Ship Channel, the nation’s busiest waterway. The port's Authority cooperates with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other representatives of the federal government to speed up the funding and the completion of a deepened and widened of the 52-mile federal waterway.

The USCG eliminated, on March 7, the traffic located along a specific area of the Houston Ship Channel, after severe weather conditions halted cleanup operations that were being conducted because of the petrochemical fire and the chemical spill of the previous month.

On March 27 Toyota Tsusho Petroleum filed a complaint against Nustar Energy Services at a US Court. The file regarded alleged off-spec bunkers, and TTP seeks $421,784.94 from NES through two claims. Namely, on April 19, 2018, NES supplied 840 metric tonnes (mt) of IFO 380 to the Singapore-flagged chemical tanker 'M/V Beatrice' at the Port of Houston.

The bottleneck in Houston Ship Channel seems to be coming under control as four tankers on Thursday were preparing to offload or pick up cargoes in the busiest US oil port, according to AIS data. The bottleneck has reportedly cut 1 million barrels per day of shipments since Monday. 

On March 25, the US Coast Guard reported that approximately five dozen ships will be in line to transit the Houston Ship Channel, as efforts to clean the waste from the International Terminals tank fire continue. TCEQ has been taking water samples from  the drainage ditch, and nine chemicals in its samples exceeded health-protective concentration levels.

The Port of Houston announced that several records were broken in 2018, including that total tonnage at its that set a record of 35.7 million tons. This reflected an increase of 9% percent from 2017. Moreover, container twenty-foot equivalent units increased 10% to 2.7 million, which is a new record. The increased activity has led to a balance of imports to exports for the year of 50/50 import to export.
