The Port of Barcelona announced that the first vessel has connected to an LNG-fueled engine at its port. This is part of Port of Barcelona's attempt to reduce shipping emissions in the port, by replacing the operation of the vessel's auxiliary engines.

The Port of Barcelona informed it has invested a total of € 926,000 to promote electrical mobility in the port area, as part of its Air Quality Improvement Plan, which aims to effectively reduce the emissions from port activity.

LNG is an option for cruise terminals to achieve sustainable growth, said delegates at the Greenport Cruise Congress 2017 held at the Port of Amsterdam. In a bid to support its growth and emissions reduction targets, the port is exploring LNG bunkering, as the cruise industry adopts the fuel more readily. 

Spanish Petroleum Company Cepsa informed that it is the first to have started marketing RMK500 fuel in the Port of Barcelona, a marine fuel containing 3.5% sulfur, destined to ships of great tonnage. In addition, the company incorporates a new barge in the Port of Barcelona, ​​with the aim of improving the fuel supply.

AIDAperla reached the port of Barcelona via the western Mediterranean, on June 7, as part of its "Welcome Cruises", to support Barcelona's environmental efforts. Before summer, the ship is going to be supplied with low-emission liquefied natural gas, while she is docked in the port, to reduce its emissions.

Carnival Corporation released artist renderings of its second cruise terminal at the Port of Barcelona, which will be Europe's newest passenger cruise terminal when it opens, in 2018. The terminal is designed to accommodate the company's "next-generation" green cruise ships, that will be fully operated by LNG, the world's cleanest burning fossil fuel.

Cepsa Gas Comercializadora presented a paper, in which it highlights LNG as the fuel for maritime transport with the greatest growth potential in the global market due to its safety, availability and price. The company also informed that, in 2018, it will become the first with the capacity to supply LNG “ship to ship” at the Port of Barcelona.

Port of Barcelona has announced the launch of a pioneering initiative which supports the use of LNG bunkers and implements a discount for cleaner ships as well as replaces the port's internal fleet with electric vehicles.

Spanish LNG terminal operator, Enagás and the Port of Barcelona have signed a deal to set up new logistics services for LNG at the Barcelona regasification plant.Both entities have signed an agreement to promote liquefied natural gas (LNG) as an alternative fuel to conventional mobility fuels.
