Spanish LNG company HAM Group, in cooperation with the Port of Barcelona and Portuguese energy firm Galp opened the first LNG fueling station within the port, to reduce emissions from port activities. The facility has two compressed natural gas pumps for trucks and vehicles, two liquefied natural gas pumps for trucks and a cryogenic LNG tank of 60 cubic meters capacity.

According to Barcelona authorities, a cargo ship collided with a loading crane in the port, causing a fire on October 31. No injuries were reported, while firefighters are assessing the situation, as they have controlled the fire. In addition to the fire four containers fell from the ship.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority announced the launch of the World Ports Climate Action Program. In this initiative, the port authorities of Hamburg, Barcelona, Antwerp, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Vancouver and Rotterdam will work together on a number of projects that address the issue of global warming.

In 2017, the Port of Barcelona recorded its best results yet in cargo handling as it seeks to become the fastest-growing European port. Total traffic (including all cargo modes) surpassed 61 million tonnes for the first time, recording a year-on-year increase of 26%.

Major cruise firm Carnival Corporation officially opened its second cruise terminal at the Port of Barcelona with an inauguration ceremony attended by government, business and community representatives. The Helix terminal will accommodate Carnival's new class of next-generation "green" cruise ships to be fully operated by LNG.

Port of Barcelona informed that during 2017 it recorded its best results yet in the main traffic indicators, allowing the Port to become the fastest-growing European port, as total traffic surpassed 61 million tonnes for the first time. Namely, almost 3 million TEU were moved in 2017, representing an increase of 32.3%.

The Port of Barcelona announced that the first vessel has connected to an LNG-fueled engine at its port. This is part of Port of Barcelona's attempt to reduce shipping emissions in the port, by replacing the operation of the vessel's auxiliary engines.

The Port of Barcelona informed it has invested a total of € 926,000 to promote electrical mobility in the port area, as part of its Air Quality Improvement Plan, which aims to effectively reduce the emissions from port activity.

LNG is an option for cruise terminals to achieve sustainable growth, said delegates at the Greenport Cruise Congress 2017 held at the Port of Amsterdam. In a bid to support its growth and emissions reduction targets, the port is exploring LNG bunkering, as the cruise industry adopts the fuel more readily. 

Spanish Petroleum Company Cepsa informed that it is the first to have started marketing RMK500 fuel in the Port of Barcelona, a marine fuel containing 3.5% sulfur, destined to ships of great tonnage. In addition, the company incorporates a new barge in the Port of Barcelona, ​​with the aim of improving the fuel supply.
