Because of the ongoing period of drought in the Netherlands, and after the advice of the National Water Coordination Committee, the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management has switched to the so called KWA scenario (‘Klimaatbestendige Wateraanvoer’).

The longest drought in decades is drying out river waterways in the Netherlands, hitting cargo traffic in the inland sector and threatening a shortage of bulk supplies. The summer of 2018 looks set to overtake 1976 as the driest one on record in the country, with almost no rain for two months.

The Dutch National Water Distribution Committee issued a request for measure scenarios, with the aim of limiting saltwater intrusion via the locks at IJmuiden as a result of the drought in the Netherlands. These scenarios are currently being developed. The draught also causes problems for drinking water.

The construction of a 900-metre-deep deep-sea quay near the HoogTij business park along the North Sea Canal will start in August 2018. The total area will be able to accommodate 130 hectares of business activity. The work is scheduled to be completed in late 2019. he Port of Amsterdam will commission the project.

Companies in the North Sea Canal Area at the Port of Amsterdam aim to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. All waste flows must be recycled by 2050 and carbon emissions limited. To achieve these targets, the area aims to be among the leading regions in Europe when it comes to addressing climate change.

Port of Amsterdam's new sea lock, which will be the world’s largest, will be opened later than planned. Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, Cora van Nieuwenhuizen, informed the Dutch House of Representatives of the altered schedule for the completion of the lock, which will be completed 27 months later. The date will be moved to no later than the end of January 2022.

The Port of Amsterdam informed that the additional charges on the storage and transhipment of ethanol in Amsterdam have stopped and that the Port can now charge the same prices as Port of Rotterdam. This enables Amsterdam to compete in the global ethanol market. This established new opportunities in the biofuels market.

Port of Amsterdam announced the launch of a digital business guide, seeking to increase the online visibility and findability of port companies. The new search engine, Portle, is designed to provide access to all businesses and terminals that are located in the Port of Amsterdam and conduct business in and around the port area.

The Port of Amsterdam constructs a new facility that will convert non-recyclable plastic into fuel for the transport sector, which will reduce CO2 emission by 57,000 tonnes per year. The plant will be built in collaboration with Port of Amsterdam and is expected to running by the end of this year. The first plant will produce more than 30m litres of fuel per year.

In order to keep up with the increasing number of construction projects in Amsterdam, the City of Amsterdam, Port of Amsterdam, Waternet and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research have launched a partnership project in Amsterdam focusing on building logistics. The pilot project will start in April 2018, with an initial evaluation scheduled for November 2018.
