Pilbara Clean Fuels Pty Ltd is progressing a development concept for a new, mid-scale, low carbon footprint LNG plant to be located at Port Hedland in Western Australia, the world’s largest iron ore export port.  

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has completed a major $15.5 million two-year project, to repair and rejuvenate essential aids to navigation (AtoNs) off the coast of Port Hedland, Western Australia.

A fire erupted onboard the Antigua Barbuda-flagged general cargo ship BBC Rhonetalm while berthed at Port Hedland in the early hours of Thursday. The ship had started its journey from China and berthed at Hedland on 24 March. 

Pilbara Ports Authority recently published its monthly shipping statistics for December 2019, marking a delivery throughput of 64.6 million tonnes (Mt). That means a 2% increase in comparison with December's throughput the previous year, in 2018.   

Pilbara Ports Authority has delivered a total annual throughput of 697.2 million tonnes (Mt) for the 2018/19 financial year. This result constitutes less than 1% change, namely a decrease of 2.06 million tonnes, from last year’s record annual throughput.

The Port of Port Hedland announced that it welcomed its first conventional roll-on/roll-off vessel, proving the industry with a more cost-effective way of delivering cargo to the region. The vessel started its journey in Japan and made a stop at Fremantle Port on its way to Port Hedland.

The Pilbara Ports Authority will cooperate with Jan De Nul Group to dredge the channel and further improve the safe and sustainable access to the Port of Port Hedland. The project is part of the Channel Risk and Optimisation Project that aims to sustain the long-operation, development, and future growth of the port.

Pilbara Ports Authority reported a new record tonnage on a single tide at the Port of Hedland. Namely, on 15 January 2019, 10 vessels left the port in convoy carrying a total of 1,754,741 tonnes of bulk product, surpassing the previous record from December 2017 by 165,680 tonnes. Before that, an Expression of Interest has been completed for the building and operation of a new general cargo facility at the Port of Port Hedland.

According to Reuters, iron ore shipments from Australia's port of Hedland terminal to China, experienced an increase by 14% in December from the previous month as shown by the port's data. Iron ore shipments to China from the world’s biggest iron ore port reached an overall of 37.4 million tonnes in December. On the contrary, iron ore shipments in November reached a total of 32.9 million tonnes, according to the Pilbara Ports Authority.
