EU to lead counter piracy efforts in 2014

From the 1st of January 2014 the European Union will assume for one year the chairmanship of the Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia (CGPCS) with Maciej Popowski, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) as EU chairperson. The chairmanship of the Contact Group is a joint endeavour of the EEAS and the European Commission and will continue the work carried out in 2013 under the chairmanship of the United States.

NATO Shipping Centre – Weekly Piracy Assessment

All mariners are advised that current conditions are favourable to piracy activity, and the presence of pirate attack groups at sea in the HRA cannot be ruled out. The threat of piracy against merchant shipping continues throughout the HRA.

Weekly Piracy Assessment from NATO Shipping Centre

The NATO Shipping Centre (NSC) has issued its Weekly Piracy Assesment from October 30 to November 6, 2013. During this week, a merchant vessel reported to be under attack by one skiff in position 05 31S 047 07E. Armed security team fired warning shots, the skiff replied fire but broke off. (06.11.2013)
