Tips for compliance with BW Discharge Regulation

The West of England P&I Club reminds now that USCG has approved three BWM systems, ships must comply with the US Ballast Water Discharge Regulation. Operators are advised to ensure that each vessel, which calls a port under U.S. jurisdiction, either complies with one of the approved BW management methods or is covered by an extended compliance date, with a copy of the letter kept aboard the vessel.

Bulk Carrier faces penalty for BW discharge

The U.S. Coast Guard has initiated civil penalty proceedings against the operator, Vega Reederei GmbH & Co. KG, following investigation into ballast water discharge where violations by the bulk carrier Vega Mars found with a maximum penalty for $38,175. USCG investigators found that around Jan. 29, 2017, while moored in Tacoma, ballast water was discharged from the bulk carrier without the use of a Coast Guard approved ballast water management system or other approved means which is a violation of the National Invasive Species Act .
