IMO's 82nd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), September 30 to October 4, 2024, has adopted a draft resolution designating the Nusa Penida and Gili Matra Islands in the Lombok Strait as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSAs).

A Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) is an area that has been provided special protection through action by the IMO because of its significance for recognized ecological, socio-economic, or scientific attributes, and which may be vulnerable to damage by international maritime activities.

The 80th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), 3-7 July 2023, agreed to designate a particular sensitive sea area in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea (NW Med PSSA) to protect cetaceans from international shipping.

RMI issued a marine notice setting out the requirements for complying with IMO Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas. A PSSA is an area provided special protection through IMO because of its ecological, socio-economic or scientific significance, and which may be vulnerable to damage by international maritime activities.
