MOL Orders for High-efficiency Cape-size Bulker Based on Advanced Technologies

ISHIN-III Technology : series of next-generation large-scale iron ore carriers Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President: Koichi Muto) today announced that it has ordered a new cape-size bulker that will adopt element technologies of the next-generation ISHIN-III vessel program to achieve high fuel efficiency. Universal Shipbuilding Corporation (President: Shinjiro Mishima) will construct the new ship, slated for completion in late 2014.MOL has repeatedly studied various technologies to realize the concept for the ISHIN-III series of next-generation vessels (large-scale iron ore carriers) announced in April 2010.The newbuilding vessel will adopt the following element technologies which are at the core of the ISHIN-III concept. New technologies will boost fuel efficiency of the new ship by more than 20% compared to conventional cape-size vessels, with a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions. Wärtsilä markets new engine to tanker sector

For greater reduced emissions and fuel consumption Wärtsilä has announced that it had started up its new 6-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex48T engine on 24th November 2011 at the facilities of Wärtsilä licensee QMD (Qingdao Qiyao Wärtsilä MHI Linshan Marine Diesel) in China.This new engine is the result of further development of the existing Wärtsilä RTA48T engine and is being marketed to the smaller bulker and tanker sectors, including Handysizes and Handymaxes.By introducing this new engine, Wärtsilä said that it had completed its adaptation of its range of low-speed RT-flex engines for all bore sizes. Maximise propulsive efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and emissions Three DFDS Seaways ferries are to be upgraded with Rolls-Royce Promas Lite systems to maximise their propulsive efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.Dover Seaways, Dunkerque Seaways and Delft Seaways serve the Dover- Dunkerque route across the English Channel. The three sisterships were originally designed for a speed of 26.5 knots, and have propellers optimised for that speed. The requirements for the current route are a service speed of 18-19.5 knots, with a few knots more available to recover delays, and responsive manoeuvrability in port. The ferries are equipped with twin screws and two engines per shaft. Normal sailing on the current route can be maintained on one engine per shaft (1+1), with 1+2 and 2+2 available if more power is needed.Rolls-Royce says that under these circumstances a substantial improvement in efficiency could be won by just fitting new blades to the propellers; blades designed to match the present operating profile. A tool to assist ship owners in improving their environmental performance Containership owner Seaspan has received DNVs new Triple-E rating. Triple-E is a voluntary self-improvement tool designed to assist ship owners in continuously improving their environmental performance. It was Seaspans vessel MOL EMERALD that received the rating a testimony to active environmental management and energy efficient transportation of goods.The rating, which was handed over at a ceremony in Vancouver, Canada by DNV President Tor E. Svensen, has been designed as a voluntary tool to help ship operators improve their organisational performance, identify ways to minimise their environmental impact and optimise their fuel consumption and thereby reduce costs.The Triple-E rating is based on the capture of environmental and operational data from ships. The common denominator of the requirements covered in the rating is that most of them can easily be influenced by the owner of the ship; either by themselves or with the assistance of third parties such as DNV.
