EPA SmartWay honors freight carriers for superior supply chain efficiency

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that 41 freight carriers nationwide are being honored for superior supply chain efficiency.U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is honoring 40 truck carriers and, for the first time ever, a barge carrier, as industry leaders in supply chain environmental and energy efficiency with its annual SmartWay Excellence Awards . Awardees are environmentally responsible carriers that move more goods more miles with lower emissions and less energy. Today’s awardees demonstrate how businesses in their industries can save on fuel costs, shrink their carbon footprints and contribute to healthier air."EPA recognizes its top SmartWay carrier partners as they lead the way for their peers in this crucial sector of our economy,” said EPA’s Office Director of Transportation & Air Quality Christopher Grundler. “We all depend on an efficient and sustainable freight sector, and these award-winning SmartWay carriers have demonstrated that they can get the job done while saving fuel and reducing greenhouse gases and other harmful pollutants.”Please click here to view the 2015 SmartWay Freight Carrier Excellence Award recipients  Source: US EPAIn the beginning, I was forthright with you propecia before and after has changed my subsistence. Test of MOL's Condition-based Engine Monitoring System started

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that it has started a demonstration test of a next-generation condition-based engine monitoring system called “CMAXS e-GICSX” (electronic Global Internet Customer Support neXt) (1) aboard the recently delivered methanol carrier MAYARO. MOL is conducting the test in cooperation with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK), Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES), and MES Technoservice Co., Ltd. The system relies on early detection of abnormalities in the electronically controlled engine to ensure correct preventive maintenance and reduce life cycle costs.MOL centrally collects big data gathered from its operated vessels, aiming to establish an integrated vessel operation support network that allows timely analysis of results on shore and at sea through marine onboard broadband systems to support vessel operation, reduce environmental impact, improve cost efficiency, and streamline vessel management, in addition to other benefits. The demonstration test is part of this initiative. The “CMAXS e-GICSX” uses the combination of technologies accumulated through MES’s “e-GICS” (2) system and a cutting-edge data analysis function using ClassNK’s “CMAXS” system (3), based on joint research between ClassNK and MES. A comparative analysis of the “CMAXS e-GICSX” system will be verified on the MAYARO, a vessel operated by MOL, which has a high level ...

DNV GL publishes new version of ECO Insight

DNV GL has published the latest release of its fleet performance solution ECO Insight. Drawing on the feedback from a rapidly growing user community, this update incorporates several new features designed to give the user even more features and analytical decision support than ever before.“One of the benefits of having such a rapidly growing user community is that we are always getting new ideas and input from our customers,” says Dr Torsten Büssow, DNV GL’s head of fleet performance management.“There has been a very positive response to ECO Insight in the market with more than 400 vessels having signed up since January this year. But what has been even more exciting is the engagement of our customers. They are continually looking to innovate, even within our solution, and we are happy to work with them to meet their needs. This new version is the direct result of their input and feedback.”The new version of ECO Insight now offers several major new features, including:A complete satellite weather feed allowing the user to compare reported with measured weather.Automatically generated PDF reports to be send periodically to predefined recipients, e.g. the crew can in this way get a performance comparison against sister vessels ...

OTS supports MOL’s commitment to reducing refrigerant consumption

Oceanic Technical Solutions has secured a long-term service contract with Mitsui O.S.K Lines MOL LNG Transport (Europe) Ltd for the annual inspection, leak testing, condition monitoring and analysis of the refrigeration plants aboard all 15 LNG carriers in the Japanese shipowner’s European managed fleet.Oceanic Technical Solutions’ Managing Director, Robert Chesters, said: “The service agreement we have signed with MOL is to ensure that the refrigeration plant installed on these vessels is completely leak-tight, resulting in significant cost savings for the owner. With new refrigerant blends costing upwards of US$2000 per cylinder, we can pinpoint system failures and prevent costly refrigerant escaping to atmosphere. At the same time ensuring that vessels are running to the optimum efficiency and reducing their environmental footprint.“Fleet managers are under increasing commercial and environmental pressure to curtail the amount of refrigerant consumed and our experience tells us that containment is the only solution. A shipboard plant is no different to a domestic refrigerator. It is a contained system that if properly maintained should not require constant topping up. Refrigerant is not a consumable it is an asset that should be retained.”Service engineers have completed their assessment of the first vessel under the MOL LNG agreement, the ...

Fixed pitch propeller delivers excellent results in service

One of the first commercial applications of MAN Diesel & Turbo’s new MAN Alpha Kappel FP propeller took place off the coast of China recently when the ‘Elsabeth C’, a 58,500-dwt Supramax bulk carrier owned by Frontmarine Co. Ltd successfully completed its sea trials. The newbuilding is the first in a series of eight sister-ships, all featuring single MAN B&W 5S60ME-C8.2 engines with an SMCR 8050 kW @ 89 rpm. The Elsabeth C’s sister ship, ‘Mirela’, the second in the series, has since successfully completed its own sea trials.Lemissoler reports that the Kappel propeller offers significant fuel savings compared to conventional propellers and, together with the new vessels’ design and lines as well as the silyl acrylate antifouling paint, contributed to the favourable results from the first two vessels’ sea trials. It reports that both vessels consumed an average 23 mtns per day at a speed of about 14.2 knots in ballast conditions during the trials. The Elsabeth C also performed a successful crash-stop test that was notable for its lack of noise and vibration.Thomas Leander, Head of Propulsion – PrimeServ Four-Stroke – Denmark, said: “A key point during the design stage was to address the problem experienced by similar vessels that ...
