Petroleum Safety Authority of Norway announced that has launched an investigation of the gas leak on the Statoil's Åsgard field in the Norwegian Sea, on 10 March 2017. The incident occurred during preparations for a well operation with the Deepsea Bergen mobile drilling unit.

On 22 December 2016, two supply ships owned by Maersk sank off Ushant, France and oil slicks, which could be the result of unpumpable residues, were observed in the area by French authorities. In order to monitor if the hulls were causing further pollution, the French authorities requested additional CleanSeaNet images over a period of two months, within a radius of 15 km around the wrecks’ positions.

US Department of Justice announced that a federal jury in Charleston, South Carolina, convicted two chief engineers of the vessel, T/V Green Sky, of falsifying documents in order to conceal illegal discharges of oily bilge waste and obstruction charges.

US Coast Guard approved a transit plan for the tug Samson Mariner to head south for repairs in Seattle with an escort tug and both departed Ketchikan on 22 February. The vessel ran aground on 15 February and released approximately 1,100 gallons of fuel in the vicinity of Rosa Reef in north Tongass Narrows, Alaska.

USCG, in partnership with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Southeast Alaska Petroleum Response Organization, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and Alaska Commercial Divers continue their response to the tug boat Samson Mariner that ran aground and spilled fuel while towing a barge in the vicinity of Rosa Reef in north Tongass Narrows, Alaska.

On February 8, the Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville Command Center watch standers received a call stating the tugboat Tutahaco was reportedly discharging bilge oil in to the river. An estimated 100 gallons of bilge oil was discharged.

According to the Indian Minister of Shipping, Coast Guard teams are responding to an oil spill which occurred after two vessels namely, M.T. BW MAPLE and M.T. DAWN KANCHIPURAM while crossing each other collided on 28th January, 2017 outside the Kamrajar harbour.

The Liberian Registry has issued Marine Advisory aiming to present guidelines on the requirements and regulations of the Panama Canal SOPEP (PCSOPEP) after having reviewed and evaluated this regulation.

Over half-way into this decade and the downward trend in oil spills from tankers continues, ITOPF notes. The average number of large oil spills from tankers, i.e. greater than 700 tonnes, has progressively reduced and since 2010 averages 1.7 per year.

The US Department of Justice has announced that two Greek shipping companies were sentenced to pay corporate penalties totaling $2.7 million after being convicted for obstructing justice, violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS), tampering with witnesses and conspiracy.
