DONG Energy to build giant offshore wind farm in UK

DONG Energy has made a final investment decision to build the giant Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm (Hornsea) in the UK. With a capacity of 1.2 gigawatt (GW), Hornsea will on completion be the world’s first offshore wind farm to exceed 1,000 MW in capacity and by a large margin become the world’s largest offshore wind farm. It will be able to meet the electricity needs of well over one million UK homes.

World’s 2nd largest offshore wind farm inaugurated

On 18th June, 2015, the Gwynt y Môr wind farm, located eight miles offshore in Liverpool Bay, has been officially inaugurated by Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales. With an installed capacity of 576 megawatts (MW) Gwynt y Môr is the world’s 2nd largest offshore wind farm. In total, 160 wind turbines will produce enough power to supply some 400,000 residential households with renewable electricity per year. The inauguration of the more than £2billion wind farm is a significant achievement for RWE (60 percent) and its partners in Gwynt y Môr, Stadtwerke München (30 percent) and Siemens (10 percent) Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, said: “Gwynt y Môr is a huge achievement and will continue to bring a number of benefits to the North Wales region. Local companies have been among those to benefit during construction and the site will bring high quality employment and opportunities for years to come. With young people receiving training as part of the wind turbine apprenticeship scheme at Grwp Llandrillo Menai and the courses offered at the college’s Energy Centre in Llangefni, North Wales is the go-to place for those looking for a workforce skilled in the field of energy.” RWE AG’s Chief Executive ...

DNV GL submits project certificate for German offshore wind farm

DNV GL has submitted the project certificate for the German offshore wind farm Meerwind Süd|Ost to WindMW, responsible for the development, construction and operation of the project. Meerwind Süd|Ost is a 288 megawatt offshore wind farm, located 23 kilometers offshore from the island of Helgoland, and one of the largest projects of its kind in North Sea history. The submission follows exceptionally close cooperation between DNV GL and WindMW during planning and construction to optimize the performance of the wind farm. Thereby WindMW is the first full certified German offshore wind farm. Occupying a total area of 43 km2 Meerwind Süd|Ost supplies clean electric power to the grid for 360,000 households. More than 100 DNV GL experts have been involved over a 36 month period to ensure the highest quality standards were maintained while overcoming significant challenges, which were posed by the distance of the farm from shore (23km), the height of the turbines (149m) and the rotor blade diameters (120m) and the size of the wind farm consisting of 80 turbines. DNV GL supported the technical pioneering work that was necessary to overcome these challenges and ensure the successful completion of the Meerwind project. This included the foundation ...
