This enables cost-effective, low-risk testing under realistic conditions for all forms of renewable energy control systems.

After more than 25 years of operation, DONG Energy's Vindeby, the world's first offshore wind farm, was fully dismantled. Vindeby, in the south east of Denmark, was constructed in 1991 as a demonstration project which was to prove whether it was possible to generate green power offshore. 

Adding energy storage to renewable energy installations such as solar plants or wind turbines, is becoming more interesting every day. On this context, DNV GL participated in the WindStock project for Topsector Energie, that focused on feasibility of combining wind, solar and storage.

Five wind turbines are slowly being towed out into the North Sea, during the summer, in order to create world's first floating offshore wind farm. The first of the 11,500-tonne turbines has been already put in place at Buchan Deep, 15 miles off the north-east coast at Peterhead.

Zentech and Renewables Resources International announced their plans to build the first Jones Act-compliant, four-legged, self-propelled, dynamically positioned level 2 jack-up vessel based on a U.S.-built barge. Bureau Veritas has issued a Preliminary Design Approval for a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine foundation designed by DCNS Energies. The floating foundation is based on a semi-submersible floater, designed to be adapted to mass production, easily towable, connectable and dis-connectable, and adaptable to site conditions and local industrial environments.

GeoSea announced that it received the Notice to Proceed for fabrication and offshore installation of 16 wind turbine foundations and an Offshore Transformer Module, for the EnBW Albatros offshore wind farm, for which GeoSea is Siemens’ EPCI partner. The Albatros is located in the “exclusive economic zone” of the North Sea, approximately 90 km north of Germany.

The Technical University of Denmark inaugurated a laboratory, where researchers will complete a modular robot for use in offshore wind turbine platforms. The robot will be used for inspection, and the long-term vision is that it will be able to carry out underwater repairs on foundations and rigs, independently of weather conditions.
