NYK discusses environmental solutions and challenges

From October 8 to 9, NYK welcomed the NYK Group’s chiefs of environmental management (CEM) to the NYK headquarters in Tokyo for a Global CEM Meeting. CEMs from the regions of East Asia, South Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America were in attendance. NYK vice president Tadaaki Naito expressed his appreciation for the daily environmental activities in each area and the harmony between the business and environmental pursuits of the NYK Group. The CEMs then shared the results of their activities and provided the latest information on environmental regulations in their regions. The primary topic of this meeting was the NYK Group’s future environmental policy (Green Policy). The CEMs discussed a proposal and schedule for reducing the number of regions from six to four, in addition to measures in response to the ISO14001 revision scheduled for 2015. Over the two-day meeting, an abundance of information was shared during discussions that bore much fruit, and the CEMs brought a global perspective to active discussions on solutions and challenges for new environmental activities. NYK gets included in Climate Disclosure Leadership Index

NYK has been included again in CDP’s Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). NYK received a score of 99 out of 100 in the CDP's 2014 Climate Change Information Request, ranking in the top 10 percent of Japan’s 500 largest companies for a third consecutive year. The CDP is an international, not-for-profit organization providing the only global system to measure, disclose, manage, and share vital environmental information. The CDP harnesses the power of market forces, including 767 institutional investors with assets of US$92 trillion, to collect information from companies on their greenhouse gas emissions and assessment of climate change and other issues related to the environment. The CDP’s annual information request was sent to the Japan 500 target companies asking the companies to measure and report data and information on climate-change-related issues affecting the companies. In fiscal 2013, NYK gathered environmental performance data from about 354 offices and 800 vessels within the NYK Group. During that time, NYK strengthened its fuel-saving activity, promoted the development of innovative technologies, and successfully reduced negative environmental impacts. Joint Shipping Initiative funds anti-piracy project in Somalia

Alternative Livelihoods to Piracy in Puntland and Central Regions of Somalia Trainees in Ely, Somalia participate in a vocational training as part of the Joint Shipping Initiative funded UNDP Alternative Livelihoods to Piracy in Puntland and Central Regions of Somalia programme.The Joint Shipping Initiative - made up of Shell, BP, Maersk, Stena and Japanese shipping companies NYK, MOL and "K" Line - announced it has given $1.5 million of additional funds to a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project to improve the lives of Somalis and security for seafarers.The UNDP's "Alternative Livelihoods to Piracy in Puntland and Central Regions of Somalia" project aims to reduce piracy off the coast of east Africa through local economic development, job creation, training, and business development grants on-shore in one of the world's poorest countries."Development projects that provide an alternative livelihood to would-be pirates are a vital element of the long-term solution to piracy," Dr Grahaeme Henderson, Vice President of Shell Shipping & Maritime, said. New LNG vessel for Chubu Electric Power gets launched

On September 5, a naming ceremony for a new LNG vessel ordered by Trans Pacific Shipping a joint venture company comprising NYK, Chubu Electric Power and the Mitsubishi Corporation, was held at the Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. At the ceremony, Toshio Mita, chairman of Chubu Electric Power, named the ship Seishu Maru, and his wife cut the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place. NYK chairman Koji Miyahara was also in attendance. This vessel's name is derived from the old name for the north and central parts of Mie prefecture, where Chubu Electric Power's LNG terminals are located. After delivery, Seishu Maru will be shared by NYK, MC, and Chubu Electric Power, and used to transport LNG for Australia and North America projects.
