MAN Diesel & Turbo delivers IMO Certified two-stroke engine with Tier III Nox control

MAN Diesel & Turbo announced that it will deliver world’s first IMO certified two-stroke engine with Tier III NOx control and Exhaust Gas Recirculation Systems. While there are already IMO Tier III-compliant vessels with EGR systems in service, the Suezmax newbuildings will be the first vessels with keel-laying after 1 January, 2016 to be officially certified as complying with Tier III emission restrictions within existing North American NOx Emission Control Areas (NECAs) and the United States Caribbean Sea NECA.

NOx compliance for retrofitted engines in ECA zones

If a diesel engine installed on board a vessel has to be replaced by a non-identical diesel engine, the replacement engine has to comply with IMO Tier III emission regulations for installations after the 1 January 2016. The market is only starting to respond to this demand, and it may be difficult to find a suitable replacement engine complying with Tier III.
