In line with a growing smart technology trend and as shipping is struggling to keep costs down in order to maintain its competitiveness, as well as to minimize human error to improve its safety record, autonomous ships provide an attractive trend.

The Norwegian Government announced that it will set a new location for a new search and rescue base to Tromsø, following the increased use of shipping in the Arctic. Tromsø is located on the northern coast to the Norwegian Sea, an addition to another two rescue bases in northern Norway; one in Bodø and the SAR helicopter base at Banak airport in Finnmark.

The Norwegian government issued a report presenting its action plan for green shipping, saying that its maritime industry is a world leader in the development of low- and zero-emission solutions. The Government aspires to reduce emissions from domestic shipping and fishing vessels by half by 2030 and promote the development of zero- and low-emission solutions for all vessel categories.

Norway began the wreck removal of the cargo vessel M/S Osfjord that grounded off Norway a year ago. The vessel was successfully removed, as the wreck removal process was divided in three steps to achieve full efficiency.

The GreenPort Congress 2019 will take place in Oslo, Norway from 16-18 October, focusing on zero emissions targets and responses to environmental challenges, as well as high tech green solutions and emissions measuring. The event will conclude with a technical visit onboard the MS Kongen, the first electric vessel in the Port of Oslo.

The Norwegian Coastal Administration released photos from a fire incident involving the Russian trawler 'Bukhta Naezdnik'. The NCA was called to assist in the extinguishing work when a fire erupted on the Russian trawler, while at the quay in Tromsø, on 25 September.

Cryo Shipping, Bergen-based bunker supplier, will develop infrastructure solutions to be able to supply fully renewable energy as a marine fuel, provided with a government's grant. The company is collaborating with major stakeholders in the hydrogen sector, initially serving Norwegian shipowners who are taking early positions as consumers of fully renewable marine fuels.

In 2019 the Norwegian Fjords saw new regulations being implemented concerning the marine protection and sustainability, given that it was important to implement stricter measures to reduce the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) in particular.

Equinor will continue working on the Martin Linge field, offshore Norway, as the company exercised to options of two months, which have an overall contract value of USD 60 million, for Maersk's Intrepid jack-up, as Maersk Drilling announced.

The Norwegian competition authority has issued a Statement of objections to Floatel and Prosafe regarding the proposed merger, on September 16. However, Floatel and Prosafe released a statement, saying that they do not agree with the NCA decision.
