Cyber security threats are not only increased, but they are becoming a part of maritime daily business. Therefore, it is important all industry’s stakeholders to understand the threat landscape, consider the given guidelines and comply with the upcoming legislation in order to be fully prepared to address the associated challenges.

Terms ‘remote-controlled’, ‘unmanned’, ‘automated’ and ‘autonomous’ have all been used when describing the new technology, but they all mean very different things. It is very possible that, in the future, vessels could be remote-controlled but still retain some onboard manning. Or perhaps they will be traditionally manned, where autonomous systems are used as a decision support tool.

The Republic of Marshall Islands issued a marine notice, setting out the revised requirements for hot work, including all ships, not just tank ships and combination carriers. Hot Work involves sources of ignition or temperature sufficiently high enough to cause the ignition of a flammable gas mixture.

North Club highlighted the steps to be taken by the industry ahead the EU General Data Protection Regulation, which enters into force in May 2018. The GDPR will update current data protection legislation by requiring businesses who deal with EU citizens to be transparent about how they use their data. The costs of non-compliance are potentially very high.

North P&I Club and seafarers’ charity Apostleship of the Sea spread an early Christmas joy to seafarers, as on December 5 they donated 59 Christmas shoeboxes which will be distributed to seafarers by AoS port chaplains and ship visitors over the festive period.
