On the sidelines of ​Nor-Shipping exhibition last week in Oslo, IMO hosted a special event to highlight some of the challenges and the solutions around encouraging women to take up seafaring roles. This comes in line with IMO's enhanced efforts during the last year to empower women in the maritime community.

A wide-ranging discussion during the "Africa@Nor-Shipping" event in Oslo, Norway explored various topics regarding unlocking the full potential of Africa's blue economy. Three separate expert panels discussed addressed competition among different maritime sectors, ocean governance and the importance of complying with international regulations especially IMO’s ship safety, maritime security and environment rules. 

DNV GL and SUMEC Marine Company Ltd. have signed a cooperation agreement, and have now agreed on a Joint Development Project (JDP) to update the Crown 63.5k Bulk Carrier design. The agreement was signed at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo.

DNV GL, automation systems vendor Høglund, ferry operator Fjord1, and the Norwegian Maritime Authority have finalized the first testing phase of the ROMAS (Remote Operation of Machinery and Automation Systems) project. The parties presented the results for the first time at the Nor-Shipping trade fair in Oslo.

During Nor-Shipping 2019, DNV GL informed that it will update its shaft alignment design rules to differentiate between Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) and mineral oils in stern tubes. The update, will apply from 1 July 2019, and is based on the phase 1 findings from the joint development project DNV GL has been operating along with the Swedish Club, Norwegian Hull Club, Gard and Skuld.

During the Nor-Shipping Conference, Wärtsilä presented its development work on a smart concept for onboard water and waste systems. The work consists of the latest environmental technology and expertise, along with real-time data collection and digital modelling. 

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries has received an approval in principle for a VLCC ‘eco-tanker’ design, capable of using a combination of volatile organic compounds (VOC) mixed with LNG as fuel and Norsepower’s rotor sail solution for wind-assisted propulsion.

During the Nor-Shipping Conference in Oslo, DNV GL - Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, proposed a five-step process in order to increase the level of safety in the shipping industry, highlighting that 'regulators have to put safety at the core when they are making new regulations to address the environmental footprint.'

The world’s largest plug-in hybrid vessel, Color Hybrid, received the title of 'Ship of the Year 2019'. Ulstein Group CEO Gunvor Ulstein received the Award from HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, during the Nor-Shipping exhibition on 4 June 2019. It will feature a battery package of 4.7 MWh, thus being able to travel 12 nautical miles only on battery power, charged with shore power in Sandefjord.
