The Nigerian Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, reiterated the Government’s determination to clear the Nigerian territorial waters of criminalities through the Integrated Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure, otherwise known as the Deep Blue Project. What is more, NIMASA is in collaboration with the National Assembly to ensure that the Antipiracy Bill will pass soon. 

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) reinstated its commitment to collaborations with international institutions for sea time training of Nigerians under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme. Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, expressed the organization's determination to explore and use appropriate ways to make sure that Nigerian seafarers got the right exposure and training.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Dakuku Peterside highlighted that the Agency remains committed to growing the ideals of the blue economy by bringing to the fore adequate knowledge of the sector in line with the capacity building drive of the Agency.

In line with the global focus on enhancing the role of women in the maritime and shipping sector, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, announced the Agency’s readiness to support initiatives aimed at getting more African women involved in the industry.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Dakuku Peterside, called the Nigerian judicial system to make sure that dispute resolution on maritime cases are treated urgently. He emphasized that the poor dispute resolution mechanism on maritime cases is keeping investors away from Nigeria.

Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) reported that the country is able to accept 40 conventions passed by the International Maritime Organisation and International Labour Organisation focusing on Maritime Safety, Labour and Marine Environment. Specifically, the non-implementation and enforcement of the conventions has been affecting investments in the country.

Because of the lack of locally owned vessels that operate in global waters, the sea time training for Nigerian seafarers has been negatively affected. Therefore, Vanguard reports that the Nigerian Federal Government has been charged by maritime experts to put forward policies in order to increase Nigeria's ship owning capacity.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Dr. Dakuku Peterside informed that NIMASA will strictly implement the IMO 2020 sulphur cap. Mr. Peterside also mentioned that all vessels that are sailing in Nigeria's waters are only allowed to use fuel that is environmental friendly.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency Dr. Dakuku Peterside informed that Nigeria will continue to seek continued technical cooperation and support from the IMO. This aims to establish a sustainable capacity to be a competitive maritime nation.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside welcomed member states of the International Labour Organisation, Shipowners and representatives of seafarers, acknowledging the importance of seafarers’ welfare in the MLC 2006 amendments.
