Dr Dakuku Peterside, Chairman of the Association of African Maritime Administration (AAMA), called developed nations and corporate bodies to support Africa and other developing countries, with the goal of building capacity and regulatory enforcement needed to maximize benefits of the ocean economy.

According to the Director General of NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside, Nigerians will be able to lift their country's crude oil for export immediately the national fleet comes into operation. The new national fleet will be 49% owned by a technical partner and Nigerian investors will hold the 51%.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency announced that it's committed to assist victims of flood and other natural disasters living in different camps spread across the six geopolitical zones in the country. The Director General of NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside made this known in Kano while presenting food and other relief materials to the Kano State Government.

According to Nigerian local media, more than 24,000 seafarers who have graduated, in the past 16 years, from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, MAN, Oron in Akwa Ibom state haven't been deployed; Thus, unemployment leads them to menial jobs and to illegal seafaring activities. There are accusations that pirate attacks in the area are caused by this category of cadets.

According to NIMASA, the Nigerian-flagged vessel MV CHARIS, tugboat, was attacked on May 5 by unknown assailants and rescued by the Spanish Navy. The rescued vessel was sent to Equatorial Guinea and has been released. 

The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has noted that Nigeria is way overdue for an active national fleet that would properly position it in the comity of maritime nations. The Director-General also stated that NIMASA had taken a lot of steps to develop the maritime sector and increase indigenous participation.

NIMASA announced the installation ceremony of the Thorium-X tablet, a fuel consumption data collection device, on board a Nigerian-flagged fuel tanker vessel, MT KINGIS, commencing the process targeted at ending green-house gas emissions on vessels. The pilot project aims at reducing fuel consumption by vessels.

NIMASA announced its partnership with the Port of Antwerp in Belgium, in efforts to boost trade and encourage foreign direct investment opportunities in the Nigerian maritime sector.  The Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, announced the collaboration when he played host to a team from the Port of Antwerp in Belgium led by the Director, Africa Port of Antwerp International, Mr. Nico Vertongen, in Lagos.

NIMASA's Director General, Dr Dakuku Peterside called stakeholders to boost the development of coastal and maritime tourism in Nigeria, noting that the tourism sector can contribute to a greater economy. Dr Dakuku called stakeholders and investors to take advantage of the opportunities in maritime tourism, and reassured that NIMASA will help in the creation of an enabling environment for their businesses to succeed. 

According to local sources, the Federal Government of Nigeria halted the National Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) concerning the training of cadets aboard, as it has costed N20 billion, up to now. The NSDP is a scholarship partly funded by  the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and State governments in the ratio of 40-60%.
