Nigeria's Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi stated that the secure Anchorage Area contract has been officially suspended, commenting that it is an illegal act to create anchorage for purposes of providing security.

NIMASA's Director General, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, highlighted Nigeria's moves to deal with the greenhouse gas emissions, in efforts improve with Nigeria's maritime space, in attempts to keep up with the environmental regulations ahead.

The government of Nigeria will ensure the maritime sector gets into the mainstream of economic strategy as it will engender economic growth and prosperity, the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, disclosed at the opening of a two-day Regional Workshop on UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework.

Dr. Dakuku Peterside, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), stated that a national policy on maritime and cooperation amongst stakeholders in the industry would go a long way in placing the sector in a pedestal that would lead to economic growth.

The Nigerian Merchant Officers and Water Transport Staff Association signed a collective bargaining agreement with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, with the goal of boosting Nigerian seafarers' terms and conditions in the maritime sector and tackling unemployment. 

Nigeria plans to establish an International Maritime Arbitration Centre in Lagos, in order to enable the timely resolution of disputes within the Gulf of Guinea region. This will in turn significantly decrease ­the current trend where maritime players in the area head to London, Dubai or Singapore for arbitration on maritime issues.

Court decided that oil rigs operating on Nigerian waters are subject to the provisions of the Cabotage Act. Commenting on the judgement, Mr. Dakuku believes that it marks the beginning of an important opportunity for job, incomes, and economic growth. He also called persons engaged in inland trade to pay their Cabotage fees.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has given his assent to the Suppression of Piracy and other Maritime Offences Bill of 2019, in an unprecedented move to enhance security on the country’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.

Hadiza Bala Usman, the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, welcomed the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency for launching the 'On Board with Gender Equality' campaign, in lights of this years Seafarers Day Celebration.

Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, informed journalists that the First Lady, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, will be leading other dignitaries and stakeholders in the maritime community to campaign and encourage more female participation in seafaring and maritime trade, as the Day of the Seafarers is approaching, June 25.
