In the Gulf Guinea, the nations are using Privately Contracted Armed Security, a model of embarked maritime security, which involves the contracting of uniformed police or military personnel from coastal or port states onto a vessel in the anchorage, port, or territorial waters of that state.

IMB reported that on 11 November, armed pirates boarded a drifting bulk carrier around 17 nautical miles SSW off Bonny Island, Nigeria, kidnapping 10 of the vessel's crewmembers. This incident is another example of the dangerous situation that is occurring in Nigeria.

The six crew members, who were kidnapped by pirates from the container ship 'Demeter', off the coast of Nigeria, were released after over three weeks of captivity. The six men, including the captain, were abducted from the Liberian-flagged vessel, while underway, off Bonny, on 21 October.

A crude oil tanker which was sailing around 21 nautical miles South-SouthWest of Bonny Island in Nigeria, on 1st of November, was approached by pirates. The tanker managed to escape, according to IMB.

Dr Dakuku Peterside, from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, informed that the agency will present the Anti-Piracy Bill to the National Assembly, aiming to combat piracy in the country's seaways.

The European Community Shipowners’ Associations announced that they are concerned about the continued piracy, armed robbery attacks and kidnapping for ransom events in the Gulf of Guinea, and particularly off Nigeria. ECSA encourages several measures in order to improve the security situation, including proper protection by coastal states .
