The US Coast Guard coordinated the tow of a disabled 611-foot freighter into the port of New York and New Jersey after it lost propulsion over 100 miles offshore in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday, on August 21. The vessel was carrying cement cargo and the cause of the propulsion loss is under investigation.

The US Coast Guard responded to the grounding of a barge in Coney Island Channel near Brighton Beach, New York, on Wednesday August 22 morning. There were 14,000 barrels of fuel oil on board the barge but no pollution was reported. The cause of the incident is under investigation.

New York's Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that a memorandum of understanding has been signed by New York power agencies and partners to conduct a study of successful offshore wind transmission models, to determine how key learnings can guide the state's procurements of offshore wind generation.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation and NYC Ferry announced the launch dates for the new Soundview and Lower East Side routes. The Soundview route will begin on Wednesday, August 15th, and the Lower East Side route will launch on Wednesday, August 29th.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced that cargo volumes in these ports set a new record for the first half of 2018, with volumes up by 6.8% over the same period in 2017, when the previous six-month record was established. Between January and June this year, the port handled 3,450,469 TEUs.

New York's Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that the New York State Public Service Commission started procurements of offshore wind to support New York's goal of 2,400 megawatts of new offshore wind generation by 2030. This is the first phase of the procurements, which will obtain about  800 megawatts of offshore wind by 2019.

A team of NYU scientists has captured on video a 4-mile iceberg breaking away from a glacier in Greenland. This phenomenon, known as "calving", is a force behind the rise of global sea water levels. The resulting iceberg would stretch from lower Manhattan up to Midtown in NY. 

The ferry 'Yogi Berra' with 18 people inboard ran aground near Wind Hole Point, Jamaica Bay, New York, on Thursday, June 28. The ship became stuck on a sandbar while operating near Wind Hole Point, Jamaica Bay. USCG is now investigating the cause of the grounding, while a USCG marine inspector will carry out an assessment of the vessel’s condition.

The New York State Public Service Commission accepted the environmental review of policy options to implement a New York State offshore wind program. This decision was made under Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s goal of providing at least 2.4 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030.

On Saturday evening, the loaded tanker 'Tofteviken' collided with the commercial fishing vessel 'Polaris', nearly 30 miles southeast of Bridgehampton, New York. The Tofteviken was transiting to New York, while the Polaris was transiting back to its homeport in Massachusetts after a night of fishing.
