Nautical Institute launches new edition of The Principles of Navigation

The Nautical Institute launched the 11th edition of The Admiralty Manual of Navigation, Volume 1: The Principles of Navigation. This edition is the first to be digital by design and is based on the assumption that the readers’ vessel will be sailed using IMO type-approved ECDIS.

NOAA improves channel depths’ presentation for safer navigation

NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey presented plans to alter the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) maintained channel depth values on raster nautical chart products, which include paper nautical charts and the corresponding digital raster navigational charts. Minimum depths (also called controlling depths) are collected during periodic USACE sonar surveys of channels.

OCIMF: Navigational assessments and audits maintain high standards

OCIMF released the information paper ‘A Guide to Best Practice for Navigational Assessments and Audits’ which will help vessel owners, operators and Masters to identify opportunities for improvement on the safety onboard and the protection of the environment through navigational assessments and audits.

USCG, NOAA to add Navigation Rules in US Coast Pilot

The US Coast Guard Office of Navigation Systems and NOAA Office of Coast Survey will incorporate the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea and the Inland Navigation Rules into NOAA’s US Coast Pilot publications. The US Coast Pilot publications already include the Coast Guard’s Vessel Traffic Service regulations.

Get forthcoming CICs on your radar

Global Navigation Solutions is giving its support to seafarers ahead of the forthcoming Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) on navigation safety which will be jointly carried out from the Paris MoU, Tokyo MoU, Black Sea MoU, Indian Ocean MoU and Vina del Mar for three months, from 1st September up to 30 November 2017.

CIC Questionnaire on Safety of Navigation is now available

Paris MoU has released the  questionnaire for the forthcoming CIC on safety of navigation in compliance with SOLAS Chapter V. The aim of the CIC is to check compliance with the applicable requirements of the SOLAS Convention, the overall status of the vessel’s navigation safety, and the competency of crew involved in navigation operations. The Paris MoU will conduct the CIC jointly with the Tokyo MoU from 1 September to 30 November 2017.

New legislation on pilot liability effective in Italy

The Standard P&I Club informs that a law was published in the Official Gazette last month introducing certain amendments in respect of liability for port pilots. The new regime became effective on 3 January 2017, amending relevant sections of the Italian Code of Navigation.

USCG:Removing 166 navigational aids

The Coast Guard has scheduled to discontinue 166 navigational aids within the Virginia Inside Passage (VIP) due to shoaling and other navigational safety concerns throughout the area.
