Reported in position 14 20N 057 11E NATO is warning that although the recently hijacked MV SINAR KUDUS is now moving south towards the Somali coast, it can still conduct pirate mother-ship operations in the Arabian Sea area. Today (March 22) at 0550 utc the SINAR KUDUS was reported in position 14 20N 057 11E, Course: 228 / Speed: 11ktsSINAR KUDUS is the unarmed ship seized by Somali pirates March 16, that was used the next day to support a pirate attack on the MV EMPEROR, which did have armed security on board with the result that the attack failed.Source: Nato Shipping Center

Weekly assessment of pirate activity Overall, piracy activity has increased over the past week compared to the week before. With the diminishing effects of the Monsoon pirates are expected to continue their activity over the coming week spreading into the central and southern Somali Basin.Gulf of Aden/Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC).In the past week one attack was noted on 03 March close to Yemeni TTW in the far east of the GoA. Pirate skiffs blending in the local traffic can be expected at any time without or little warning. The main piracy threat remains in the central and eastern part of the GoA/IRTC. Overall, reports of attacks remain below 2010 and 2009 levels.Arabian Sea/Greater Somali Basin.During the past week (25Feb-04Mar) piracy activities was again concentrated in the southern and eastern Arabian Sea and has started in the last few days in the southern Somali Basin. The main piracy threat remains in the central and eastern part of the GoA/IRTC. Overall, reports of attacks remain below 2010 and 2009 levels.Arabian Sea/Greater Somali BasinExcept for the far southeast of the Indian Ocean, weather is not affecting the greater Somali Basin and Arabian Sea. During the past week (19 -25 February) piracy activities were concentrated in the southern Arabian Sea between 10 to 15 Degrees North and 58 to 64 Degrees East. One yacht has been pirated and several merchants been attacked or approached in that area. Numerous calls of suspicious sightings close to the Omani coast indicate another focused area for pirates operating area. Pirates are using dhow mother ships to launch their attack skiffs against any targets of opportunity. Arabian Sea/Greater Somali BasinOver the past week the northeast monsoon hampered pirate activity in both the Arabian Sea and the Greater Somali Basin. However, the improved forecast for the next days will allow the Somali pirates to exploit the opportunity both in the Somali Basin and especially in the Arabian Sea. The past week (21-27 January) saw one pirating (BELUGA NOMINATION) and one attempt (ZHEN HUA 26). NATO Shipping Center weekly assessment - 14 January 2011 Gulf of Aden/Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC). The monsoon is not effecting small boat operation in the GoA and skiffs blending in the local traffic to conduct piracy can be expected at any time without or little warning. The past week has seen several attack calls in the western part of the GoA and even southern Red Sea. Evaluation of these incidents has revealed that the approaches and attacks are related to fishing and angry fishermen and not to piracy. The main piracy threat remains in the central and eastern part of the GoA/IRTC.Arabian Sea/Greater Somali Basin. On Sunday, 02 January, a suspicious skiff was reported operating in the central IRTC. The weather in the rest of the Arabian Sea, as well as in both the northern and southern Somali Basin, remains favourable for small boat operations and hence pirate operations in areas are not greatly affected by the monsoon. NATO Shipping Center launches a Piracy Alert Map NATO Shipping Center has launched a new initiative on the NSC webpage. The so-called "Alert Map" will make the work of Masters and Company Security Officers (CSO) easier when they have to choose routes through the pirate infested waters. The "Alert Map" can be foundon the Operation Ocean Shield subpage, and on there will be posted the latest piracy relatedalerts, in co-operation with MSCHOA.This geographical presentation of the alerts makes it easier for shipowners, operators and charterers to get an overview of the situation in the Gulf of Aden, Somali Basin and NW Indian Ocean, asit will contain the latest week to 10 days of piracy activity, making it easier to see the hotspots on the map.The map reflects all piracy events dating back to and including 2008, and will be updated on normal work days; To see the latest updated version click here.Source: NATO Shipping Center
