V.Group has requested NATO to provide naval escorts for shipping in the Black Sea, due to concerns that vessels could be at risk, because of the conflict in Ukraine, according to the Financial Times. However, the inquiry was rejected by NATO.

NATO's Operation Sea Guardian Task Group concluded its first focused security patrols in the Western Mediterranean Sea this year on March 25.

But 10 years ago, the European Union, Nato and others began to deploy naval forces to the region shortly after the UN Security Council allowed warships to enter Somali territorial waters. Pirate attacks have now all but stopped, after reaching a peak in 2011.

NATO’s Science and Technology Organisation is partnering with Globalstar Europe Satellite Services (SGAT) for IoT System to monitor the oceans. The research focuses on the horizontal motion in the sea and on how surface properties are transported deeper into the water column.

U.S. Maritime Advisory 2018-014 informs of a continued GPS interference by vessels and aircraft operating in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea It is causing the alternation of GPS signals and affects the navigation and communication of vessels. GPS interference is causing the loss or the alternation of GPS signals affecting bridge navigation, GPS-based timing and communications equipment.   

NATO has requested ship operators to report any instances of GPS or AIS interference in the Mediterranean. NATO is concerned about cyber security in the area, after detecting several electronic interferences and also possible GPS jamming in recent months, mostly in the Eastern Mediterranean.
