NAMEPA issues “An Educator’s Guide to the Marine Environment”

NAMEPA recently released “An Educator’s Guide to the Marine Environment,” a learning guide designed to provide maximum flexibility for educators in both formal and informal settings when working with students to understand the marine environment. The Guide contains STEM and NGSS objectives and has lessons for students K-12 on ocean acidification, ocean exploration, the marine industry and ecosystem health. The Guide contains twelve lessons in total, and is the second learning guide released by NAMEPA, the first being “An Educator’s Guide to Marine Debris.” The Guide includes a scavenger hunt, a lesson on vessel sound signals, a food web lesson, and more. The Guide was created to provide educators with a tool to help students become more informed on the marine environment and encourage environmental stewardship. NAMEPA, an organization comprised of marine industry professionals – who help carry 90% of the world’s goods and energy – is committed to working with the public to help “Save Our Seas.” The Guide can be downloaded for free online at www.namepa.net/education. NAMEPA and Ocean Conservancy sign MoU

NAMEPA and Ocean Conservancy signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in order to foster a collaborative effort that encourages marine pollution prevention, advocates for sensible and sustainable marine environmental practices, and heightens public awareness of impacts and mitigation techniques of marine pollution. Marine debris is one of the most universal problems we face when it comes to having clean and healthy oceans. A primary goal of the MOU is to establish Marina Cleanup Day this June, and encourage recreational boaters and marina staff across the country to help remove trash before it reaches our oceans. Both parties will work together to develop a strategy for dissemination of information and materials, boost collaboration with other entities, and jointly host educational events such as webinars to increase awareness of and participation in Marina Cleanup Day. NAMEPA Annual Conference to focus on new ECA challenges

NAMEPA (North American Marine Environment Protection Association) Annual Conference, themed 'Marine Environment Protection:  Evolution or Revolution?', reflects both the revolutionary challenges (new Emission Control Area (ECA) requirements, fuel sourcing, and partnerships) and evolutionary changes in the maritime industry.  The conference will be held on October 29th aboard the Hornblower Infinity at Pier 40 in New York, NY beginning at 0800.  "Our industry continues to experience revolutionary changes, as well as the evolution of responses to today's commercial and regulatory environment," stated NAMEPA Chairman Clay Maitland.  "We are facing a new era in marine propulsion, while updating and improving aspects of our operational practices.  We continue to create strategic alliances with groups anxious to work with us to improve the performance of our industry, as well as conduct risk analysis to make sure we are on track for success."  The "Revolution" of the new ECA coming into force on January 1, 2015 will prompt discussions about low sulfur fuel supplies and fuel alternatives.  Other revolutionary challenges being discussed include the maritime industry's willingness to partner to achieve collective success.  From an "Evolution" standpoint, a mixed-discipline panel will address the maritime industry's last 25 years of learning and improving its ability to respond to ...

NAMEPA earns recognition from Rightship

In recognition of their strong commitment to sustainability North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) members have been awarded an automatic positive adjustment (+5 points) towards their vessels' RightShip Environmental Rating. "NAMEPA is one of only 8 organizations worldwide to secure this high standing in our system" says Warwick Norman, CEO of RightShip. "We believe it is important to acknowledge and reward those who have invested time and effort to operate above compliance, and who demonstrate dedication to environmental sustainability". RightShip's Existing Vessel Design IndexTM (EVDITM) and GHG Emissions Rating enables charterers to select the most energy efficient vessel. This is achieved by estimating the theoretical amount of CO2 emitted per tonne nautical mile travelled, based on the ship design characteristics at the time of build. Unlike the IMO MEPC's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), RightShip's EVDITM can be applied to existing ships and allows relative comparison of a ship's CO2 emissions to vessels of a similar size and type. Major charterers and shippers are taking a leadership position in sustainability, driving industry change through market-based solutions. As of June 2014, 22 charterers - or 23% of global non-containerized trade - factor energy efficiency into their decision making. This accounts ...
